Hello All,
I just re-enabled the ability to include attachments in postings on the SLO Bytes Bulletin Board.  That ability was lost when I migrated to the new host.  I figured out how to re-enable it.

General Discussion / Display Word Document Full Screen
« on: December 25, 2019, 02:50:26 PM »
Hello All,
I recently wanted to expand a Microsoft Word document so that it covered the entire screen, hiding the toolbars and everything else but the document itself.
I learned how to accomplish this by reading the information at
https://helpdeskgeek.com/office-tips/view-word-documents-in-full-screen-mode/

The option that I chose was to add a Toggle Full Screen icon to the Quick Access Toolbar.

Hello All,

I will be the Second Session Presenter at the SLO Bytes General Session on January 5th, 2020.  I will speak on Amazon Echo and Wf-Fi Enabled Switches.
Using a Gosund Wi-Fi enabled switch, ($17.99),  I am able to use Echo's voice commands to turn on/turn off my smart TV.  No hub is required. This is more a proof of concept than a critical need.
I will also explain how to send the Echo's sound output through my home entertainment center.
My notes can be found at https://www.slobytes.org/presentations/sutter-0120/Alexa%20and%20Home%20Automation.docx

Hello All,
I just uploaded a screen capture video showing how I replaced a plain sky with one more dramatic using the Image editor Luminar 4 by Skylum.
I used the California Sunsets add on from the Luminar Marketplace.

Hello All,
I have a drawer full of Logitech keyboards and mice, so many that I identify the USB dongle that matches the mouse/keyboard by labeling each with a letter.  Today, I wanted to add a Logitech K800 keyboard but couldn't find the appropriate dongle.
I solved the problem by downloading the Logitech Unifying Multi-Connect Utility from https://support.logi.com/hc/en-my/articles/360025141574, installing and running the software.
In very short order, it paired the new keyboard to my existing USB Unifying dongle.
Life is good.

Hello All,
Here are my notes from the SLO Bytes Photo Group meeting of 12/08/2019
TOPIC: One Spot; many images

Ralph Sutter opened the meeting with landscapes seen throughout the day and night from his patio and bedroom window.
He followed with a series of still image that he tried to animate using Adobe Premiere Elements 2019 and Proshow Producer 2019. The latter was more realistic.

Next, Connie Sutter displayed images of a grove of trees at different moments, creating everything with her iPhone.

Kaye Raul followed with different landscapes that she modified using Skylum Luminar software. The rest of the group, intrigued by the possibilities, decided to dedicate the January 2020 session to software manipulation programs.

Bob Styerwalt captured the passage of time as observed at various locations of his home.

NEXT MEETING Sunday, January 12th @ 2:00 pm
TOPIC: Photo Editing Software; Please share images that you modified using your favorite image manipulation software.

General Discussion / Delete a Ghost Printer from Windows 10
« on: December 04, 2019, 08:21:34 PM »
Hello All,
Running Windows 10 on my Dell 8930 desktop, I recently used Word's Mail Merge to address my Christmas envelopes.  When I tried to print the envelopes, my Brother MFC-J870DW inkjet printer told me that I was using the wrong size paper.
I tried performing the same action with the same printer from a my Lenovo X1 Yoga, computer laptop, the envelopes printed normally.  I decided to delete the printer from the first computer and reinstall it.
That didn't work.

While the entry in Printers and Scanners showed that the printer was deleting, it never finished doing so even after numerous shut downs and restarts.
I reinstalled the drivers for the printer.  This gave me the entry,  MFC-J870DW (Copy 1) and I could successfully print Mail Merged envelopes choosing that "printer" but the original MFC-J870DW just told me that the paper was the wrong size.
(I remind you that the same printer with the same envelopes printed them successfully from the laptop and (Copy 1).

I finally stumbled across the solution to removing the non-functional MFC-J870DW by performing the following actions
I went to the Windows Search Window (Windows Key + S)
Typed run
Typed printmanagement.msc
Double Clicked on All Printers
In an open area of that last screen, I right-clicked the mouse and then left-clicked Refresh

True to its name, the Refresh command refreshed the listing of printers.  That listing no longer included the entry MFC-J870DW (deleting)
I hope that others faced with a similar issue find this post useful and save themselves from the exasperation that I experienced.

General Discussion / Dictate into a Chat Window on a PC
« on: November 14, 2019, 11:38:30 AM »
Hello All,

Being a poor typist, I always dread it when I have to communicate on-line via a Chat window.  I wondered if I could use the Speech Recognition Tool built into Windows 10 (and before) to dictate into Chat.
Yes, I can.  Just hold down the Windows key  + h and Windows will launch the Speech Recognition Tool, inserting a transcript of your voice in any text box in which your cursor is located.
This assumes that your computer has a microphone installed.  Most current laptops have a microphone built in.  My desktop does not.  However, I have a USB webcam attached and its microphone launches when I hit the Windows Key + h key combination.

While no speech recognition program is error free, they are all more accurate then my typing.

Hello All,
I recently had to replace my water heater. It was an elaborate project so when I finished, I made o diagram of the plumbing and electrical connections for my own future reference.
To create the drawing, I used Techsmith Snagit 2020https://www.techsmith.com/screen-capture.html and Adobe Photoshop Elements 2019; https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/how-to/features-overview.html
View the diagram at www.fullbean.com/house/water-heater-diagram.jpg

Hello All,
Here are my notes from the SLO Bytes Photo Group meeting of 11/10/2019.
TOPIC: Trees; images of arboreal specimens
Ralph Sutter opened the meeting by playing three tutorials that he created. They are
Add Text to an Image with Irfanview; http://www.fullbean.com/tutorials/Irfanview-Add-Text.mp4
Configuring Irfanview to Play .mp4 Files; http://www.fullbean.com/tutorials/irfanview-play-mp4.mp4
Using FormatFactory to Join Two or More .pdf Files; http://www.fullbean.com/tutorials/Format-Factory-PDF-Joiner.mp4
Sutter then showed a slideshow of trees seen in and around Redding California's Sundial Bridge.
Ralph then shared a series of tree images sent by Connie Sutter during her visit to Westlake, Hangzhou China.
Kaye Raul followed with photos of trees large and small.
Bob Styerwalt aimed his camera at local fruit trees and bushes.
John Waller, in addition to showing the thriving redwoods of Yosemite and elsewhere, offered numerous images of dead and fallen trees forming natural sculptures.
Several members commented that most the deciduous trees of the Central Coast have not yet begun to change color or lose leaves.

Hello All,
If the freeware graphics program, Irfanview; www.irfanview.com, doesn't play .mp4 videos, open Options/Properties and Settings/video/Sound and change the selected option from Use internal video/sound player to Use external player
I created a screen capture video showing the steps.

Easy Transition from Windows to Linux
John Kennedy, Webmaster
East Central Ohio Technology User’s Club

With the deadline for Microsoft dropping support for Windows 7 (and following that Windows 8.1) coming in a couple of months, many Windows users are wondering what options they have. They can buy a new computer which comes with Windows 10. They can hope that their older computer can upgrade to Windows 10. Or they can consider switching over to the Linux operating system which is both free and works great on older computers. Learn how easy it is to transition over to Linux with some cross-platform programs that you might already be using. John will be sharing the programs he used while a Windows user that he still uses as a Linux user. Using these programs will make the transition to Linux a breeze.
