Dick,
I am glad the see that you could make good use of the Oregon fire map. The weather conditions in Lane County, where Eugene and Springfield are located, are gradually improving. Onshore winds are slowly reversing the very windy conditions that made so many fires throughout the state rapidly expand to unprecedentedly large dimensions. It is projected that the smoke will be blown away eastward by late Sunday, or soon thereafter, and that the onshore winds could bring some rain on Monday or Tuesday, barring any unforeseen radical changes in the weather.

There is more information about the Holiday Farm fire to be found at the below URL's. Although the attached snip of the Oregon State Fire and Hotspot Dashboard shows the red Stage 3 evacuation zone touching upon the eastern outskirts of Springfield, the fire itself is still some considerable distance away. With improved weather conditions, this edge of the fire could be contained by the end of the weekend.

OREGON STATE FIRE MAP.

For those of you who might be interested in studying the fire situation in Oregon at this time, this frequently updated map shows it well.

Center your screen on a point of interest and mouse-click on the plus sign at the lower right to enlarge that area. It shows the three stages of Fire Alerts and the inner portion of the Red Alert area shows flames graphically to reveal the actual burned areas.

The worst of them is the Beechie Creek Fire coupled with the Riverside Fire, and the Lionshead Fire a bit further north EAST. The three of them comprise a huge combined area east of Salem and south of Portland and environs. Statewide there are 37 active fires at this moment, totaling over 800,000 acres burned.

Initially, the previous weather reports had this area scheduled for 98 degrees on Thursday and 95 degrees today (Friday). By a stroke of extreme good fortune, some very cool air arrived, which made the situation much improved. It was only around 70 degrees today. Hopefully, an onshore wind will move the fire and smoke away from Salem and Portland, but there are still plenty of endangered structures in the eastward territories.

On Thursday, the smoke was so dense that everything turned red. The smoke cloud blotted out the sun, so nighttime came a couple of hours earlier than expected. The devastation along Highway 22 is considerable. The small towns of Detroit, out by Detroit Lake, and Gates have been very badly burned.

The map should help you get a grip on what the situation is. Searching for more information is largely based on Googling by City names or designated fire name.

Somehow, in the course of my attempting to get things going again, I misdirected the saved Screenshots files to a video folder. I must have done that myself. For some reason, this was blocking Screenshots from working, so no files were saved.

Oh well, all's well that ends well..........

OK. So, I found that somehow the display settings were for two screens.

So, I set Display back to one screen, and the second screen disappeared. I rebooted and then successfully saved a SNIP and Sketch image, and it only had one screen.

Now, I have to find out how to get the Printscreen key back to functioning and locate where it is sending the image files and things should be back to normal.

Thanks very much for offering to help with this, Alan.

Alan,

I have finally figured something out.

On a few occasions lately, there appeared to be no cursor on my screen. I pulled it back in from off to the right. I wondered why it took so long to come out of the right edge of the screen. Somehow, presumably as a result of the recent updates, I have a second screen off to the right of the one I am viewing, and the mouse cursor was lurking over there.

So, Printscreen was doing its job OK, when I clicked to save a screen, that's what it was doing, saving BOTH of them.

So, now I get to the point of needing to eliminate the unwanted second screen to the right.

Hi Alan,

 - There is only one monitor.

 - This is happening in Snip and Sketch also (double image). I activate the snipping tool by clicking on its icon and then clicking for new.

 - The Printscreen activation has been "Fn" and "Printscreen" key. The double image started on 8/22/2019. There have been a couple of updates around that time. At this time, the Printscreen seems to have stopped working. I no longer have a new printscreen image in the Screenshots folder if I activate printscreen. Perhaps they are going to a different folder?

The computer is a Dell desktop with WIN10 Pro installed. Usually, I figure things out by going to settings and making appropriate adjustments, when needed. I am a bit lost at this time trying to get a handle on what is wrong and am thinking that the updates have caused the problem.

My Printscreen has started producing a double image. I assume that this was caused by the recent updates. Does anyone know anything about this? This is only occurring on my Dell computer. The HP is still OK.

How can I reset Printscreen so it only captures the actually viewed screen without adding the blank windows desktop image?

Hi Ralph,

For purposes of clarification, the slides were scanned to photo files by the Pacific Image Powerslide 3650. Then the multiple photo files were stitched together by the Arcsoft Panorama Maker 4 program. The Powerslide scanner can only save individual images as the carousel rotates, one slide after another, to produce an individual file for each slide.

The Powerslide 3650 is no longer available: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/430671-REG/Pacific_Image_PS3650_PowerSlide_3650_3600dpi_Automated.html

The superseding Powerslide model is the Powerslide X: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1361847-REG/pacific_image_ps_x_powerslide_x_automatic_slide_scanner.html

The 3650 performed very well, so I assume that the X model does just as well.

General Discussion / Re: Automatic download of program updates
« on: August 03, 2020, 06:01:53 PM »
Dick,

Perhaps you might consider Settings>Update & Security>Recovery>Go back to the previous version of Windows 10. That might undo the complications (hopefully). There is also the Troubleshooting option to consider.

To stop the updates from automatically installing:  https://www.guidingtech.com/48828/delay-disable-mandatory-updates-windows-10/

This option is for Windows Pro only. Access the Local Group Policy Editor. Go to Configure Automatic Updates. Select: Notify for downloads and notify for install.  You can also restrict installs to a specific day and time, so it won't interfere with your computing.

To access the Local Group Policy Editor: https://www.isunshare.com/windows-10/5-ways-to-access-local-group-policy-editor-on-windows-10.html

I have yet to upgrade my HP desktop to WIN10 Pro, so I am only guessing as to the effectiveness and reliability of the above. It looks as if it should work.

General Discussion / Windows 10 2004 and Photo Viewing.
« on: July 26, 2020, 03:13:16 PM »
Just yesterday, my HP Omen Windows 10 2004 received its latest update. It went along OK and wasn't all that long to install. Upon completion of the installation, the screen offered a look at a few of the now current features. Photo viewing and the Magnifier were highlighted, so, I went along for the ride and checked it out. I am not certain as to what the magnifier and viewing offered before yesterday, but I am very much impressed with the newly installed capabilities.

I have been posting a lot of scanned color slides on Facebook that were taken as far back as the late thirties, when Kodak's color film had an ASA setting of 10, and which produced very sharp images. Later, Kodachrome 25 was the basic standard, which also produced very sharp color images. This was especially useful for scenery shots and panoramic stitches.

Once the photos and dialog are posted on Facebook, they can be both viewed and downloaded, if desired. Downloads can be viewed on one's own viewer(s) and scrutinized for close-in details. However, with today's Windows 10 2004 capabilities, it isn't necessary to download the photographs to extensively view them in large screen and very close-in detail.

In Facebook,  Left mouse-click the image and you will get a partial enlargement. Then, right mouse-click, and select "view image". If desired, left mouse-click for the enlargement of the entire photo. This size of the photo file will determine how large this display will be. Now, the screen reveals only part of the image, but the bars along the side and bottom of the window can move right and left, up and down, to display the various sections of the large photo.  Both a "+" and "-" sign will change the display from full screen to enlarged. You can change back and forth, as needed.

Then, to scrutinize the details at an even higher resolution, depress the Windows 10 Logo Key and the "+" key, and one of the three magnifier options will appear on your screen. In the case of the Lens option, a window will appear that can be moved around the image by mouse to view its image enlarged by 2 to 5 times. You can preset the dimensions of the lens window in Magnifier Settings. You can choose between lens, docked and full screen in Settings.  To exit the magnifier, depress the Windows 10 Logo key and the Escape key, and it disappears. Nifty.

These capabilities make it possible to fully view large, high resolution photographs without having to download them.
