General Discussion / New PUSH Articles Available
« on: April 22, 2018, 10:03:37 AM »
Hello All.
I just uploaded the latest batch of PUSH articles to the SLO Bytes web site.
PUSH articles are short write-ups that come from SLO Bytes parent organization, APCUG, the Association of Personal Computer Groups.
That organization periodically offers material for insertion in the newsletter of its local groups.  Rather than add them to SLO Bytes' monthly newsletter, HardCopy, (www.slobytes.org/news.html) I upload all of the articles to our web site.

The latest PUSH articles may be found at www.slobytes.org/push/0518/

You will find past batches of articles at http://www.slobytes.org/push/index.html

The condensed listing resides at http://www.slobytes.org/push/push-condensed.html

General Discussion / Alternatives to Typing - Request for Help
« on: April 13, 2018, 11:23:04 AM »
Hello All,
I've begun working on a project to create text without typing.  I plan present it at a future SLO Bytes Second Session meeting.
I am only considering freeware and trialware as opposed to commercial software.

One approach is optical character recognition (OCR).  The user scans a document and then uses OCR software to turn the image into text.
This is possible by pasting a .jpg image into Microsoft OneNote, selecting Copy Text from Picture and pasting the results into another document.

I found more OCR programs at https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/top-5-free-ocr-software-tools-to-convert-your-images-into-text-nb/  and elsewhere

Another approach is to use Speech Recognition software
One such program is Voice Notepad; an add on for Google Chrome - See https://dictation.io/speech

Please feel free to add the software/methods that you use.

General Discussion / Notes from the SLO Bytes Photo Group for 04/08/18
« on: April 08, 2018, 04:44:15 PM »
TOPIC: Flowers
The topic for the Sunday, May 20th meeting will be Flowers
Share images of flowering plants.

Notes from the April 8th Session; TOPIC: Circles
The session opened with Ralph Sutter screening beautiful images forwarded by Stanford Brown. View them at www.slobytes.org/digital/images/brown-images.one

Sutter then played a video slide show with circular objects featuring ceiling lights, spinning discs, coins and wind chimes.

Alan Raul followed, taking the group to local hardware stores with assorted pipes, dowels and fasteners. Raul occasionally applied color saturation and haze reduction with dramatic results.

John Waller took the opportunity to share pictures of wheels on farm implements and locomotives with a mix of round and spherical objects found in the heavens and around the house.

Bob Styerwalt looked to his home for images of paint cans and door knobs before venturing out to the seashore with circular patterns among the waves and the wildlife.

Notes on SCaLE

SCaLE Videos https://www.youtube.com/user/socallinuxexpo
SCaLE clip: http://www.slolug.com/videos/102.mp4 (Very slow and problematic download; must be restarted many times)

The problem is with Alan’s host, GoDaddy, not with the actual file
I copied Alan’s file to my account on Dropbox and was then able to download the file in 3 minutes versus more than one hour on GoDaddy

General Discussion / Running Gparted on Ubuntu 17.10.1
« on: March 14, 2018, 03:06:29 PM »
Hello All
I'm in the middle of a new install of Ubuntu 17.10.1 and couldn't get the disk partitioning program, Gparted to install, despite assurances from the Gnome desktop that it was, in fact installed.
A Google search revealed the following comment
"For people having problems running gparted on Ubuntu 17.10: note that the default graphics environment is now Wayland and not X11. It appears that some programs (like gparted) haven't made the switch yet.

Before you log in, click on the gear next to login and switch to xorg. Then gparted should come up just fine.. would be nice if they warned you about this, or perhaps printed a useful error message... I don't think it's fair to blame gparted though."

I followed these suggestions and was finally able to launch Gparted.

Hello All,
Here is how to install LibreOffice 6 from the Ubuntu Terminal with Snap
Open the Terminal (At the Ubuntu desktop, hold down the Ctrl key and press t)
Enter the next line
sudo snap install libreoffice

To launch LibreOffice 6 type the next line at the Terminal
/snap/bin/libreoffice

Simply typing libreoffice will launch an earlier version of the program.

General Discussion / Notes of the March 11th 2018 Photo Group
« on: March 12, 2018, 06:32:16 PM »
Hello All,
Here are my notes from the SLO Bytes Photo Group meeting of 03/11/2018
TOPIC: Fire

The session opened with Ralph Sutter calling attention to recent postings at http://www.slobytes.org/digital/links.html, the Links page of the club web site. There, you will find a listing of 13 free photo editors.

Sutter then played a video showing fire ranging from the false fire of a realistic battery-operated candle to a birthday celebration, burn pile and wood stove.

Alan Raul followed with fire images of propane heaters in sidewalk cafes and flckering flames in a church sanctuary. He then demonstrated how applying warming filters can heighten the impact of the scene.

Kaye Raul mixed fire and smoke in her photos, explaining the challenges of capturing the latter in a way that added to the composition.

John Waller took the opportunity to share pictures of firefighting aircraft and to experiment with the Fire effect in Photoshop, setting ablaze ocean horizons and telephone wires.

Monica Tarzier showed rustic scenes illuminated by the campfire or the outdoor fire pit.

The presentations were followed by a wide-ranging discussion of image editing, image presentation and photography in general. The consensus view is that auto-advancing slide shows are more apt to be viewed in their entirity than presentations in which the viewer has to click on each image to advance the program.

Several members praised the capabilities of the slideshow presentation program, Proshow Gold; http://www.photodex.com/proshow/gold.

The next meeting of the SLO Bytes Photography Group will take place on Sunday, April 8th beginning at 2:00 pm.  The topic will be Circles.  Attendees are encouraged to bring images of things circular.

General Discussion / SCaLE 16X Report - Sutter
« on: March 12, 2018, 04:15:52 PM »
Hello All,
SCaLE 16 Ubicon Track Writeup – Ralph Sutter

I recently attended SCaLE 16X, the 16th annual Southern California Linux Expo.  It was held in the Pasadena Convention Center March 9-12, 2018 offering 17 separate tracks.  As in years past, I was looking forward to following the Ubicon track, which focused exclusively on Ubuntu.  When that track didn’t appear in the initial on-line schedule, I began to wonder if the volunteers from Ubicon had decided to opt out this time.  Finally, about 2 weeks before the convention, details about Ubicon began to appear on the SCaLE site.  Ubicon did indeed take place, running Thursday and Friday.

Thursday offered 5 sessions ranging from System 76 lamenting Canonicals’ unexpected cancellation of the Unity project and their launch of POP OS to presentations on Snap Apps, System Security and a talk by José Antonio Rey flying in from Perú to explain Open Source and Worldwide Communities.

Friday added 4 more sessions.  Following the theme of the open source community, J T Nelson detailed how he and his colleagues working in the Hollywood and Gaming industries, produced professional-quality video using powerful, readily available royalty-free on-line video editing software.

Author Nathan Haines gave a presentation on the evolution of Ubuntu followed by an Ubuntu Questions and Answers session.
The closing speaker, Jono Bacon, spoke on his time with Canonical as the Ubuntu Community Manager.  He along with other speakers on the Ubicon track, stressed the invaluable contributions of volunteers in developing and advancing Ubuntu.

In addition to the speakers, a principal attraction at SCaLE is walking the floor of the Exhibit Hall.  With over 100 exhibitors I had ample opportunity to collect swag for my grandkids and speak with reps from PIA, System 76, VideoLan and many others.

Alan Raul and I carefully scoured the Pasadena Convention Center hoping to find free food to match the outstanding offerings of SCaLE 15x.  Alas, that was not to be.  The best we could do was complimentary coffee and bagels discovered when we followed a food cart to the DevOps Ballroom.

We did manage to get comped cappuccino’s from Inteligencia Coffee thanks to two baristas curious about Linux.  We also scored free admission to the USC Asia Pacific Museum given the fortuitous coinciding of Art Night Pasadena with SCaLE 16X.

Will I attend SCaLE next year?  Most certainly.  It always affords something for all users of Linux, from end users like me to professional programmers and developers.  I’m looking forward to 2019.

General Discussion / Re: Spectrum Internet Speed
« on: March 07, 2018, 08:52:17 AM »
Hi Alan,
I'm envious.  Here's what I get in the hinterland with Advanced Wireless (http://www.advwireonline.com/wireless-internet.html)
Ping 21Ms Down 15.09Mbps Up 20.98Mbps
Where I live, the only "reasonable" alternative that I have to wireless Internet is AT&T's DSL with an advertised download of 3Mbsp and actual speeds somewhat slower if the service works at all.

General Discussion / Re: Any suggestions for a free Windows 10 photoviewer?
« on: February 20, 2018, 08:18:33 AM »
Hi Doug,
You may already be familiar with the program, Irfanview.  That's the photo viewer that I use.
It's free, fast and opens many different file formats.  You can expand its capabilities even further by downloading the corresponding plugin.
One thoughtful feature; During the install, if you choose to have Irfanview be the default program for everything that it can open, it asks "Really?", giving you another chance to reconsider your choices.
See www.irfanview.com.
In downloading the program, read carefully before clicking.  Numerous sites offer Irfanview.  Some of them try to entice/trick you into downloading additional software by tempting you with large buttons that don't link to the Irfanview download.
