Hello All,
Raspberry Pi Imager allows the user, with one click, to format an SD card for use in a Raspberry Pi computer, greatly simplifying what might be a multi step process with many opportunities for errors.

This open source freeware tool is available in PC, Mac and Linux versions

Here are my Notes for the SLO Bytes Photo Group meeting of 09/13/2020

TOPIC: Artistic Growth Three; Learn a new skill for use inside or outside the camera and present it to the group. The meeting took place via Zoom

Ralph Sutter opened the meeting, calling attention to the Links Page of the Photography web site.
Two articles were added for the September meeting. They are
Open HEIC Files in Windows 10; https://www.slobytes.org/digital/heic.html and
  Wi-Fi Photo Transfer; https://fullbean.com/tutorials/WiFi%20Photo%20Transfer.mp4
Download images from an iPhone to a PC wirelessly
Program suggested by Alan Raul, tutorial by Ralph Sutter
   Also on YouTube at https://youtu.be/lIKo3PzThTw

Next Sutter shared a series of images featuring blossoms of fruits and vegetables. Ralph explained that he used Irfanview to insert titles. He controlled the order in which Irfanview displayed the images by opening an image in that program and then clicking on File/Thumbnails/Options/Sort Thumbnails/By name (natural/logic order).

Alan Raul showed his results of long exposures of running water at Waller Park in Santa Maria. A typical exposure for these shots were ISO 64, 10 seconds at f/22. He used a Variable ND (Neutral Density) filter with his 35mm f/2.8 Sony lens to get the desired effect. He use the following web site as a guide on how to set up his Sony mirrorless camera.
https://alphauniverse.com/stories/set-up-your-camera-for-long-exposures/

Stanford Brown followed introducing CopyTrans HEIC for Windows
https://www.copytrans.net/copytransheic/

John Waller demonstrated a new tool in Adobe Photoshop, the Object Selection Tool, useful for quickly selecting part of an image for further manipulation. John then showed the results of his low light tests with varying speed and aperture settings and different lenses.

Kaye Raul used Aurora HD https://skylum.com/aurorahdr with .raw files to improve shadow detail in images taken at Waller Park.

NEXT MEETING: Sunday, October 11th, 2020@ 2:00 pm

General Discussion / Re: Record Zoom Session without Host Enabling It
« on: August 24, 2020, 10:27:43 AM »
Hello Again,
I added a video to illustrate how I used the open-source program, OBS, to do a video screen capture of a Zoom session.
View it at https://www.fullbean.com/tutorials/obs.mp4
and on YouTube at https://youtu.be/uNO7jC6X__E

A better solution is to record the session directly with Zoom.  However, if the Host has not enabled that feature or has not enabled screen recording for participants, OBS offers a work-around

General Discussion / Record Zoom Session without Host Enabling It
« on: August 23, 2020, 02:34:54 PM »
Hello All,
Zoom allows the host to record the Zoom session.  Host may also authorize participants to record session.
If host doesn't enable recording by other participants, a participant can still record the session by using a screen capture program outside of Zoom.

Not all screen capture programs work for this purpose.  One that does is the open source freeware program, OBS.  It is available in versions for PCs, Macs and Linux machines.  Download it from https://obsproject.com/

OBS is a sophisticated program with capabilities that extend far beyond simple screen capture.  To set up screen capture, you must launch OBS with Zoom already running or Zoom won't detect your webcam.

Here is the setup in OBS

Launch OBS
At the bottom of the screen, you will see various tabs.  Find Sources tab
Click the + symbol under Sources and select Display Capture
Click OK
Click OK a second time
Do not click Enable Preview.
If you inadvertently checked it, you will see many nested screens, one inside another.
Put your cursor on the largest of these nested screens, right click and uncheck Enable Preview
On the right side of the Display Capture, you will see an eyeball and a lock.
The eyeball must be white in order for Display Capture to be active.  If it is dark, it is disabled. (Think Photoshop Layers)

Before you begin Screen Capture, choose where the recording will be saved.
Do this by clicking on Settings on the Controls tab (extreme lower right of screen).
Go to Settings/Output/Recording/Recording Path and browse to the desired Save location.

To begin screen capture, click Start Recording on the Controls tab
Click on the Zoom session, minimizing the OBS, minimizing the OBS program if necessary.
To stop recording, return to OBS and on the Controls tab, click Stop Recording

OBS will save the recording at the location that you selected earlier.
Set that location

The image below shows the settings for Zoom within OBS.

He called attention to
https://askleo.com/how_do_pixels_and_dpi_and_resolution_and_picture_size_and_file_size_all_relate_to_each_other/ and
His own slideshow, Kayaking in the San Juan Islands, https://youtu.be/cgaL6nGPgEs

Sutter opened the session by playing his San Juan Kayaking Slide Show

Alan Raul followed showing how he used the Sketch feature in Adobe Photoshop to create drawings from some of his seascapes

Doug DePue first showed how he fused several slides together with his scanning program, Powerslide 3650. He then demonstrated the numerous configurations possible for magnifying displayed image with Microsoft's Magnifier, a feature of Windows 10 built-in

Stanford Brown demoed the audio compression program, Switch by NCH Software, using it to compress audio files without noticeable loss of clarity.

Kaye Raul experimented with low angle photography and adding texture to images by creating semi-transparent layers in Adobe Photoshop

General Discussion / Fast Startup in Windows 10
« on: August 08, 2020, 08:51:34 PM »
Hello All,
Enabling Fast Startup in Windows 10 allows your computer to restart more quickly than it would without Fast Startup enabled.
However, there are times when you may want to make sure that your computer shuts down completely.

If you want to learn whether this feature is enabled, follow the link below this line.
https://help.uaudio.com/hc/en-us/articles/213195423-How-To-Disable-Fast-Startup-in-Windows-10

Or do the following...

If your computer connects to the Internet with an Ethernet cable, shut the machine down.  If you see a green light next to where the cable plugs in, you have Fast Startup enabled.  No green light indicates that Fast Startup is not enabled.

To force a one-time complete shutdown, power off the computer normally and then physically unplug it from the power outlet   You just forced the computer to bypass Fast Startup but if Fast Startup is enabled, it will still be enabled the next time you reboot/shut down the machine normally.

Ethernet Green Light indicator tip thanks to Alan Raul.
