You can try to help over the phone, get in your car, drive to their house if they live close enough, create some instructions with screenshots and email that to them, and try to walk them through what needs to be done.
What about someone who hasn’t a clue and isn’t comfortable changing things on their computer? Think your mom, dad, aunt Tillie, etc.

9/15 - It’s all about the Pi, Raspberry Pi
Register Here  https://forms.gle/pnGBimyfiYCnuLcA8
Registration closes at 11:30 ET on September 14.

The low-cost Pi is designed to let people experiment with building software and hardware. It is a very small single board with 1, 2, or 4 GB RAM and USB 3.0. The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B sells for $35 with 1GB memory, but you can pay more to get more memory, a $45 Raspberry Pi 4 has 2GB memory and a $55 board 4GB memory. It can be used as a low-cost PC, from browsing the internet and playing high-definition video to creating spreadsheets, word-processing, and playing games. It can be used in various projects, from music machines to weather stations and tweeting birdhouses with infra-red cameras. The Pi uses the Linux Raspbian OS, based on Debian created by Ian Murdock, and his wife, Debra (we learned that at the Review & New workshop).

Dave Melton will show us how he programmed his Raspberry Pi 4 to automate his sprinkler system; others will show us what they do with their Raspberry Pi devices. It was initially created for kids but, aren’t we all kids at heart and having fun with technology.

New Event

Review and New with the Linux Team

August 25 – Register here    https://forms.gle/PqYwtFiCkh3CVD548
Registration closes at 11:30 pm ET on August 24.

This is a separate workshop not in the Learning Linux series and has a unique registration link. It is only for those new to Linux or interested in learning about Linux. And those attending our series who need to clarify and review some of what we have talked about.

The primary focus will be an open mic Q&A session where beginners can ask those questions they felt they couldn’t ask before. This will be the time for you to get the answers you need to some of those burning questions like: “What did you mean by .…?” or “Will you repeat ..…?” or “Show me again … ?” or “I still don't understand ….?” or “How do you …?” or “Can you explain ....... in a different way?"

General Discussion / Re: Bitwarden - Request for Comments
« on: August 11, 2021, 03:12:54 PM »
Hello All,
I have used Bitwarden beside LastPass and find the two to be worthy rivals.
I added the Chrome Extension for Bitwarden.  With it installed, the Bitwarden icon on my Chrome Taskbar shows whether I have a saved password for the site that I am visiting.  If so, then I can use Bitwarden to paste my Userid and password into the appropriate fields.  Since my Userid is often my e-mail address, I  then only have to copy and paste my password from Bitwarden to the site to which I wish to log in.

I am currently using the free version of the Personal plan.  I can access additional features by paying $10/yr for Premium membership.

I find that the password generator is easier to find in Bitwarden than in LastPass.  Ditto for importing/exporting my saved passwords.  For the time being, I will continue to use both programs.  Once my LastPass subscription expires, I may not renew it.

https://forms.gle/Bk4DaqtLJmjqaen26

Learning Linux #9 - Orv and John, Linux Evangelists, respond to your comments and suggestions from the Linux #8 workshop.

We received a lot of good suggestions at the last workshop. Today, we will respond to those questions and let you know what we are going to do to answer them. We will talk about:
•   being honest about our limitations and Linux on a Chromebook
•   more command line tools that do things easier for you
•   running multiple versions of Linux on a single USB/thumb drive
•   using a Raspberry Pi as your desktop replacement, NAS (network attached storage) and some possible software alternatives, maybe talk about running Windows programs in/on Linux
•   release cycles for Linux, reviewing use of live media, and where to find previous recordings.
Join us for a lot of information about Linux and then we will have some time for more questions in the open mic portion.

________________________________________

6/23/21 – Roundtable registration closes at 11:30 pm (PT) on June 22. https://forms.gle/LiCbarmbhUaBsrd6A

Roundtable - Now that in-person meetings are possible…
Let’s get together and talk about the plans we have for our groups as our areas open up to in-person meetings and if/how APCUG can help.
•   All in person
•   Hybrid – Zoom (online) + in person
•   All Zoom (online)
•   How will you be handling your classes, SIGs, Forums, etc.
The main problem seems to be those on Zoom not being able to hear what is going on in the in-person meeting and interaction between the two groups of people. Please let us know if you have found a solution.
•   What equipment is needed and how much everything costs?
•   What are you doing with the equipment you used in your meeting room?
•   Have you created a survey for member input? If so, please send Judy a copy to share with the other groups.
By sharing, everyone should get helpful ideas for their group.

From intelligent audio to humanoid robots.

My 3D Printer, Larry Fortna, President, Lakes At Leesburg Computer and Technology Club

There are numerous 3D printing capabilities from FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) to SLA (Stereolithography), ranging from a couple hundred dollars upward to thousands. Larry is not going to explain how all of them work, just his setup, which he has been using for over six years now.

Larry will cover the tools he uses to design a 3D object for printing, the software he prefers to use to process the 3D objects into gcode (the 3D printer's language), and the
software he uses to make 3D printed objects. He will talk about the filaments available, their pros and cons, and ways to improve the look of the finished product, the build plate, calibration, and maintenance of your machine, as well as some homemade tools he uses.

Larry is constantly finding uses for his 3D printer. He doesn't know how he would get along without one now. So, join Larry to learn why and how you, too, should have a 3D printer.

General Discussion / FormatFactory Install
« on: May 30, 2021, 06:11:49 PM »
Hello All,
I often use the freeware program, FormatFactory for its many features.  I have posted on the program at this bulletin board on several occasions
See https://slobytes.org/smf/index.php/topic,547.msg789.html#msg789
      https://slobytes.org/smf/index.php/topic,340.msg484.html#msg484
      https://slobytes.org/smf/index.php/topic,423.msg609.html#msg609
I have also warned that FormatFactory, by default, installs PUPS (Potentially Unwanted Programs)
You can avoid the PUPS if you pay attention during the install and decline all other software that is offered
See my personal website commentary on YouTube at
     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JElWXRqZDE
     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSNcoJkH78E
and on my personal website at https://www.fullbean.com/tutorials/Format-Factory-PDF-Joiner.mp4

Today, I downloaded the program from http://public.pcfreetime.com/FFSetup5.7.5.0.exe.  This is the creator's website.  I do not trust any other sites offering the download.
When I attempted to update FormatFactory to version 5.7.5.0 released on 05/22/2021 I was blocked from doing so by Microsoft's built-in safeguards.  Microsoft stated that FormatFactory contained PUPS though it represented a low risk.  I accepted that risk.

Here are the steps that I took that allowed me to install the software
In the Windows 10 Search Window (lower left corner next to the Start button), type Windows Security
When that page loads, go to Reputation-based Protection
Find Potentially Unwanted App Blocking and move the slider to Off
I was then able to install FormatFactory
Having done so, I immediately reenabled Potentially Unwanted App Blocking  by moving the slider back to ON

Caveat
I chose to over-write Microsoft's safeguards in order to install FormatFactory and made sure that I paid attention as it installed.
I declined all offers for additional software.  I then restarted the computer and immediately performed an antivirus scan.
(It came back clean)
