General Discussion / Basic BASH Script Automatically Installs Programs in Ubuntu

Hello All,

I recently created a script that, when run from a terminal, automatically installs certain programs in Ubuntu or Ubuntu-like systems.

For a line by line annotated version, see https://www.fullbean.com/computer/linux/bashscripting.docx.
  With the exception of the first line, #!/bin/bash, the lines beginning with # are comments.  They are intended to explain what is going to happen as the script runs.  When it executes, the script ignores them.

If you plan to try template.txt out, rename it template without the .txt extension
and insert it in the home directory of your Ubuntu system.  Read the embedded comments if you choose to install it in the /bin directory of your system's root

Today, APCUG's Judy Taylour sent out the following alert.
CCleaner version 5.33 was compromised with malware. Please check to see which version of CCleaner you have on your computer.
Open CCleaner and you will find the version number in the upper left corner on the title bar. If you have the compromised version, update to the current version.

General Discussion / Adding Audio Files to PLEX

Hello All,

As a memo to self, I just created a video screen capture showing how I add music to a PLEX server by dragging that music from iTunes into the PLEX server.
NOTE:  Dragging the files from iTunes includes the data stored in the metatags.  When I tried simply dragging .mp3/.m4a files from the original source to the PLEX server, the PLEX application (not the PLEX server) didn't see them.  It reported that the added folder was empty.  No amount of refreshing, updating or optimizing changed this.

The topic was Obsolescence. 
Ralph Sutter opened the meeting with a slideshow ranging from erasable paper to his comb.
Bob Styerwalt shared images of old hand tools, early computer manuals, computer hardware and an impressive collection of film cameras.
John Waller showed oxcarts, vintage airplanes, analog cell phones and music players.
Connie Sutter brought images of cave paintings, primitive fire pits and one room school houses.

The topic for the Sunday, October 8th meeting will be Geometric Shapes
Share images featuring horizontal and vertical lines, curves and geometric shapes.

Here are my notes from today's meeting of the Photo Group

TOPIC Books
Alan Raul opened the meeting with a collage of images shot at the Phoenix Bookstore. Alan captured images of books from many different genres and then built a slide show from them using the software program, Proshow Gold, http://www.photodex.com/proshow/gold

John Waller followed with shots of texts offered at the Santa Maria Public Library.

Ralph Sutter showed messages conveyed either by text or by visual images from his recent travels.

Kaye Raul shared scenes featuring the library of her mother

Bob Styerwalt displayed some of the books found in his personal library. The categories included volumes on travel, history, religion, classics, reference materials and technical volumes. Like Alan and Ralph, Bob used Proshow Gold to present his images.

Following the display of images, Kaye shared an article that predicted how new technologies would reshape our lives, rendering obsolete many current devices and behaviors. This resulted in lengthy conversations, so much so that we chose Obsolescence as the focus topic for the September meeting

Hello All,

Here are my notes for the July 9th meeting of the Photo Group
TOPIC Deliberate Distortion
Ralph Sutter opened the meeting by calling attention to the two new listings on the Links page, http://www.slobytes.org/digital/links.html.
The first is for the Polaroid Snap Touch digital camera with a self-contained printer
The second, Affinity, is photo editing software that claims to rival Adobe Photoshop in capabilities at a vastly lower one-time purchase price
Sutter demonstrated the Focus Merge feature of Affinity. The photographer takes multiple shots of the same image, changing only the point of focus. Focus merge then takes the sharpest part of each photo and creates a composite image that is in focus everywhere.

Alan Raul showed how altering the colors of an image can dramatically alter its visual impact. He then used the editing program, ACDSee, to both purposely and playfully manipulate subjects

Don Jones shared photos of illusive marauding rabbits that routinely play havoc with his landscaping

John Waller mixed the whimsical with the artistic, using masking layers to stylize his dog and transforming a local country road into what looked like a meandering stream. He also took a step back in photographic history showing a landscape taken with a pinhole lens

Monica Tarzier enhanced images of flowers and pine cones in ways not seen in nature.

At the close of the meeting, Alan, Bob and John gave Ralph photos that they took at the SLO Bytes BBQ on 07/02/17. Raul will create a video slide show combining those images.  I have uploaded all of the images to the SLO Bytes web site.  You will find download links at www.slobytes.org/photos/2017bbq/index.html.  Please note that the images are in three zipped files.  They must be extracted in order to be viewed as individual images.  They should not be confused with Alan's upcoming slide show.

Hello All,

I just purchased the photo editing software program, Affinity from https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/
It bills itself as an alternative to Adobe Photoshop.  At $49.99 total price, not subscription, I found it to be quite useful.
One particularly intriguing feature is Focus Merge, allowing you to take a series of similar images with different points of focus and
combine them into a single image that chooses the sharpest area of each image and uses it for the composite image.

I am eager to explore additional capabilities of this product.

Hello All,

The SLO Bytes annual BBQ will take place on Sunday, July 2th, 2017 in conjunction with the July General Session.  Look forward to oak fired hamburgers with all the condiments.  Home made cake will also be served.

There is no charge for current members.  They may also bring one guest, again at no charge.  For additional guests, we suggest a $5 per person donation.

If you haven't already RSVPed, please do so by e-mailing me at ralph@rsutter.com so that we may make the appropriate arrangements.

This will be the first BBQ at our new location, the San Luis Obispo Guild Hall, 2880 Broad Street, San Luis Obispo.  The facility offers the option of outdoor seating among the oaks.

Hello All,

I use a Virtual Private Network, VPN, on my desktop computer.  The service, Private Internet Access, PIA; https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/, offers many different locations from which I can connect.  I chose Silicon Valley.
When I attempted to read the Craigslist San Luis Obispo want ads, https://slo.craigslist.org/, the following message returned

After I disconnected from the VPN, I was able to access Craigslist without incident.

I then selected Hong Kong as my VPN location and got the same response from Craigslist.  Switching off PIA VPN restored my ability to access Craigslist.

This is a behavior that I haven't seen when browsing to other pages behind a VPN.

Monica Tarzier offered pictures of flowering bushes, local landscapes, shots of the sky and sunlight radiating from a bowl of tomatoes

Alan Raul rounded out the presentations with a slide show of memorable dishes that he ate in various restaurants along California's Central Coast
