This month's workshop will start with Orv Beach and a Taming the Terminal session—Chapter 5. We're nearing the end of the Basic introduction and want to know where you want Orv to go from here (he has some ideas, but we'd like to hear yours).

Our "Software of the Month" section will be our "keynote" presentation on KDEConnect by Drew King. This software lets you connect your Smartphone to your Linux computer and do all sorts of things on your phone FROM the computer.

John Kennedy will be handling the "Question of the Month": What are the differences between two flavors of the same distro with different desktop environments? He will try and point out what differs between Mint-MATE and Mint-Xfce.

Before we go to our "Open Mic, Questions, Answers and Discussions," John will be sharing a new to him distro that has a very unique installation program (a lot different than we've seen in the installations we've done). Then we might take a short trip around the OS (depending on time) to see a few other unique takes on the desktop (it has a very modern look that might be too modern even for him).

Hello All,
I created a short video showing how I used the freeware program, Irfanview, to create a script for batch processing of images.
With batch processing, I was able to quickly select multiple large format color images and change them automatically to black and white.
Using additional settings, I also automatically resized them to 1800 pixels on the long side, reduced the dots per inch to 72 and added a border around each image.

General Discussion / Notes from the Photo Group Meeting of 07/09/2023
« on: July 09, 2023, 05:00:12 PM »
Hello All,
Here are my Notes from the SLO Bytes Photo Group Meeting of 07/09/2023

TOPIC: Black and White Photography

Ralph Sutter opened the meeting with candid images of BBQ attendees converted to black and white using Skylum Neo, saved at 72 dpi for quicker display while using Zoom

Alan Raul shot images around the Central Coast of boats, structures and landscapes, using his new Sony 28mm F2.0 lens. All the images were modified using Camera Raw in Photoshop. In Alan's absence, Ralph showed his pictures for him.

John Waller used several different methods within Adobe Photoshop to transform photos from color to black and white. He adjusted the saturation level of the R, G and Y channels. He also explored the effects that can be created via software filters inside Photoshop, embossing both still and video images

Stanford Brown shared photos of his one year trip as a young man that took him from Argentina to Japan, Cambodia, Thailand, Pakistan, Vietnam, India and Nepal. He focused on the sites seen and the people that he met as a young man.

The next meeting will take place on August 13th, 2023, beginning at 2:00 pm via Zoom The topic will be Celebrations

The meeting schedule for the remainder of 2023 is as follows
  September 10
  October 8
  November 12
  December 10

Technology Always Seems To Be Changing The Way We Listen to Music at Home and In The Car.  In my opinion, the way we listen to our favorite tunes at home and in our cars has probably seen the most changes. I'll review how we've listened to the music we choose in our homes, starting with the 78-rpm record and all the devices in between, bringing us up to date with today's various streaming options. Then the focus will move to how we consume music on the road, starting with when it was so "cool" to have a push-button AM radio in the car. I'll also focus on utilizing your existing Compact Disc collection now that new cars no longer have a CD player and streaming from an online service, using Bluetooth, flash drives, smartphones, and more.
This is a presentation I'm constantly updating, so there is always something new to present.

AirTags and Tiles
Don’t leave home on vacation without AirTags or Tiles. They are indispensable for luggage tracking; countless people have already recovered lost luggage using these inexpensive tracking devices. This presentation also includes free apps to detect all nearby Bluetooth devices. This is a good defense for finding any Tile or AirTag hidden in a purse, backpack, or car without the owner's knowledge.

The Apple smart speakers: HomePod and HomePod mini, AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max

Download 4k Videos from the Web - in time for your vacation. Have you ever been on a plane, train, or ship with such low bandwidth that you cannot play a video? Yellowstone National Park is a similar experience, with very few cell towers within its vast area. This presentation will show you how to download videos from YouTube and other free sites at home using a free application for Windows, Macintosh, and Ubuntu Linux, so you can copy the video file to your laptop, smartphone, or tablet to view on the go. Additionally, if you subscribe to a media service like Netflix, apps for the subscription services allow you to download their movies and TV episodes. However, it is not exactly obvious how to do that. You will see how to do that with Netflix

Join us this month as we continue to explore the Linux operating system. Cal Esneault will answer this question: "What's the difference between the Mint Cinnamon desktop environment and the new Ubuntu Cinnamon desktop environment?"

For the Software of the Month: Drew King will be sharing the KDEConnect program, where you can connect your smartphone to your computer, interact with it, and practically do what you would do on it while still on the Linux computer.

Our Desktop Environment Spotlight for June will be John Kennedy, sharing features of the Xfce desktop environment. We won't have a Distro Dive as we haven't had any volunteers to share something other than a Deb-based distro. So, we'll skip that feature again this month.

And before we open things up for general questions and discussions, Orv Beach will be back with another lesson in "Taming the Terminal."

General Discussion / Conversion Calculator
« on: June 17, 2023, 03:05:34 PM »
Hello All,
I routinely copy my favorite cooking recipes to my website so that I can refer to them quickly rather than go searching through card files, cook books and other recipe websites.
See https://fullbean.com/recipes/recipes.html
Lately, I have begun to convert all volume measurements to weight equivalents in grams; grams over ounces because 454 grams is a more precise measurement than 16 ounces.
Needing to convert 1 tablespoon of nutmeg to grams, I used the link below
    https://www.aqua-calc.com/calculate/food-volume-to-weight

The site told me that 1 tablespoon of Nutmeg weighs 7 grams
(One tablespoon of salt weighs 18.3 grams)

I could find the gram weight of a cup of rolled oats, short grain rice, millet or Gold Medal General Purpose Wheat Flour (UPC: 00016000104105)
As shown, the site could provide very specific volume to weight conversions

The same site also offered to calculate mortgage rates, cylinder volumes, solid geometric figures, quadratic equations, generate passwords and furnish many more conversions

I found the information to be very useful

Working with Windows. Windows 10 and 11 are complex operating systems with many features and functions. Even if you've used Windows for a long time, there is still more to learn. So, do you want to learn how to improve your basic computer skills? How to make Windows run faster and smoother? Solve some PC problems all by yourself? Learn to use some useful computer keyboard shortcuts? Learn better ways to find and view files with Windows File Explorer? How to make Windows 11 look and work more like Windows 10? All this and much more in this easy-to-follow Working with Windows tutorial.

Windows Security Secrets (Windows 10/11). Microsoft Windows Security, formerly known as Windows Defender, offers various features that can be considered competitive against other antivirus software in the market. However, as with any product, Windows Security is not perfect and might not meet the needs of all users. For example, some users might require advanced features, like a secure VPN, or have specific needs related to enterprise-scale network security. Many third-party products may offer these features, which would need to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. This presentation will walk you through the little-known features of Windows Security with a hands-on demonstration.

General Discussion / SLO Bytes Photo Group Notes for 06/11/2023
« on: June 12, 2023, 10:15:50 AM »
Hello All,
What follows is my SLO Bytes Photo Group Report for June 11, 2023

TOPIC: Boats

Ralph Sutter opened the meeting with a series of images shot at the Morro Bay Harbor before heading up the coast to above Cayucos.  There, he shared numerous pictures of the Point Estero, a wrecked commercial fishing boat on the rocks of Estero Bluffs.  Ralph used a Zeiss FE 35mm F2.8 ZA primary lens on a Sony A7IV camera

Alan Raul shot images of boats at Baywood Park in Los Osos and Morro Bay. He chose to only show original JPGs from his Sony A7iv camera WITHOUT any modifications. Last month he shot all his photos with a Sony 35mm F2.8 lens. This month he shot with his Sony 24 - 70 F4.0 lens trying to only shoot at 28mm. He found that about 80% of the pictures could be shot at 28mm. He has a new Sony 28mm F2.0 arriving this week.
Also http://www.365.acdsee.com/folders_public.php?profileid=1618852&folderid=2245798

Kaye Raul ventured to both Avila and Port San Luis for her images.  offering seascapes, both in color and in black and white.  Kaye suggested that the group look at the link  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63xd7qu83FU&t=2469s for an impressive demonstration of Photoshop’s generative fill.

John Waller visited Lopez Lake focusing on boats seen at the Marina and in Mallard Cove.  The then moved to Morro Bay and captured the harbor dredge and Coast Guard self-righting rescue boats.  Using his new Canon EOS R6 Mark2  camera, John shot a hawk perched in a tree and then cropped the image severely while still presenting a tack-sharp photo.

Stanford Brown took us on a round the world tour of boats ranging from canal boats in Italy to freighters from Argentina, tug boats in Alaska and junks in Hong Kong before returning to local waters
The next meeting will take place on July 9th, 2023, beginning at 2:00 pm via Zoom The topic will be Images in Black and White.
