FormatFactory Install
« on: May 30, 2021, 06:11:49 PM »
Hello All,
I often use the freeware program, FormatFactory for its many features.  I have posted on the program at this bulletin board on several occasions
See https://slobytes.org/smf/index.php/topic,547.msg789.html#msg789

I have also warned that FormatFactory, by default, installs PUPS (Potentially Unwanted Programs)
You can avoid the PUPS if you pay attention during the install and decline all other software that is offered
See my personal website commentary on YouTube at
     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JElWXRqZDE

and on my personal website at https://www.fullbean.com/tutorials/Format-Factory-PDF-Joiner.mp4

Today, I downloaded the program from http://public.pcfreetime.com/FFSetup5.7.5.0.exe.  This is the creator's website.  I do not trust any other sites offering the download.
When I attempted to update FormatFactory to version 5.7.5.0 released on 05/22/2021 I was blocked from doing so by Microsoft's built-in safeguards.  Microsoft stated that FormatFactory contained PUPS though it represented a low risk.  I accepted that risk.

Here are the steps that I took that allowed me to install the software
In the Windows 10 Search Window (lower left corner next to the Start button), type Windows Security
When that page loads, go to Reputation-based Protection
Find Potentially Unwanted App Blocking and move the slider to Off
I was then able to install FormatFactory
Having done so, I immediately reenabled Potentially Unwanted App Blocking  by moving the slider back to ON

Caveat
I chose to over-write Microsoft's safeguards in order to install FormatFactory and made sure that I paid attention as it installed.
I declined all offers for additional software.  I then restarted the computer and immediately performed an antivirus scan.
(It came back clean)
