I found Brown's one on Security useful, but only after a lot of searching to find what to click to get to it!

General Discussion / Re: Page size of some desktop programs

:D  Here is a solution.  While in Minimize position, use the top left corner arrows to adjust the top and left positions you want to keep.  Then go to the bottom right corner arrow and make your final adjustment.  You may now go to Maximize and back to Minimize and it may hold these dimensions on this and your other apps!
You may still make other changes, and as long as you do not use the bottom right corner arrow last, you will keep the desired size for the Minimize window.
This usually works for Windows 10.  I do not know about prior O S's.
Note:  Sometimes this doesn't seem to work until the next AM when I turn the computer on.

Again, I tried lots of things to solve this yesterday and none seemed to work.
This morning, as far as I can tell, ....
I do not know why.     I wish I could tell you which of the many things I tried solved it.  I worked with my WIN 10 Settings, I tried various "Printing" things, I tried various IrfanView things.
In any case, I am delighted and very thankful!!
Obviously, it is now time to do a new Back Up
 :) :) :D :D ;D ;D !!!!

I now think this change MAY have been made when I was editing a photo's size and shape for Printing, probably with IrfanView.  I remember the last change I made on the photo I was working with, AGAIN just before printing, it gave me another additional option of Landscape or Portrait. Since I felt checking Landscape would give me the width of area I needed in the Print, I clicked Landscape and it gave me what I needed, so I successfully printed it.  When I then closed my pictures down, I discovered that this problem change had been made in several of my apps (including this one), but by no means ALL of them.
I cannot figure out how to return these apps to giving me their normal size and shape in Maximize and Minimize.
Does anyone have any ideas about how I can safely proceed without messing up things further? My last Full Acronis BU was July 11 and I would rather not go back that far and loose that much email (and other stuff). For example, is there any way to cancel Recent IrfanView changes? OR, do you have any other ideas?  "Resetting" my Windows 10 leaves my files, but removes all installed programs and Settings.  Too drastic.
Any Help is appreciated!

General Discussion / Page size of some desktop programs

I have somehow managed to change the page size of several of my desktop programs when opened in the reduced size, from my preferred 1/2  of the vertical screen, to 1/2 of the horizontal screen.  I somehow did this when working with the size of a photo I was printing and changing from Portrait to Landscape. I used to know how to change this back and then keep the change, but can no longer remember how to do it.  Can someone help?  Thanks.

Your phone rings and it is "Molly .. calling you from Apple Support" to advise you that your Apple Cloud is compromised and you must call 844-822-2855 and they can repair your computer! ( Of course, it will cost you, and in any case, if you let them in they will mess up your machine!  The Robo calls start at 6 AM or so and can be repeated all day.  If you can block phone calls, block 909-803-5220, and also 716-442-2268..  The calls come from operations in India and Pakistan. (the real Apple phone number is 800-692-7753). Otherwise, just hang up quickly.  They are clever and trying to deal with them at best just results in them hanging up.
Also, apparently the same group has calls advising you that "Windows Microsoft - your Windows license key has been expired" and all services are suspended on your computer.  To renew them, you are asked to call (the 844 number above) for the same people and "services".
If you want to read more about this Google the 844 number or "Molly calling from Apple Support."

General Discussion / Non-Microsoft program updating
« on: July 16, 2017, 12:44:44 PM »
In pre-Windows 10 days, on my old now junked desktop computer, I used to have a program that scanned my non-OS programs and advised me when they had an Update available. I no longer remember its name, or if perhaps it is no longer available. My memory is bad enough now that if it exists it would be helpful. Are you familiar with such a program, and if so, is it safe?

Windows 8!!?!

Regarding the SnapPower nightlight:  It is certainly a clever and interesting idea, but I have tried a variety of nightlights in my home to help keep me from falling at night, and they are all less expensive and easier to use than the SnapPower.
They all are easily replaced when needed, and they all simply need to be plugged into an outlet. For vacations or even very short term shut offs, you just need to switch off or unplug them.  I have had my best success with those that do not use bulbs that burn out and have to be replaced.  I prefer ones that turn off when very low light levels appear.

General Discussion / Re: new Microsoft Surface PRO
« on: June 27, 2017, 07:48:57 PM »
I continue to read reviews which point out the limitations of the new Surface Pro, especially the Windows 10 S operating system.  I am no longer certain that this is the answer for me, but look forward to trying it out when they are in the stores. I intend to give the new crop of Apple machines   a good look to replace my current   iPad 4, 9.7" machine. While I have been happy with it, I still do not like some of the limitations of the Apple machines.

General Discussion / new Microsoft Surface PRO
« on: June 22, 2017, 10:27:28 AM »
The new version of the Microsoft Surface PRO has arrived. It follows the Surface Pro 4, but has not been labeled #5. The reviews are beginning to appear and while they are generally positive, faster better new chips, bigger power supply, and longer battery time are some of the good new things pointed out.  Some things people wanted to see changed didn't all happen.  For example, physically the unit is the same as the model 4, and the ports have not been updated to new faster versions or additional ports. It also seems to have a couple of the same problems as the model 4.  Here is the "goes to Sleep when not wanted" problem as told on ZDNet.

The operating system is the new Windows 10 S, a somewhat cut down version, that can only run apps from the Windows Store.  I read that in a couple of months you will be able to update it to the Windows 10 Pro version for no charge.
