General Discussion / Dual booting Linux and Windows
« on: October 09, 2022, 11:33:34 AM »
This month our Linux meeting dealt with a lot of information on dual booting Linux and Windows.

I highly recommend you download the October video of the meeting. It's only about 525 MB. Do not stream the video but download the video to your computer. It starts about 10 minutes into the video.

Alan has reinstalled Windows and Linux operating systems on two of his computers and one laptop.
These are dual booted between Windows 11 Professional 22H2 and Ubuntu Linux 22.04.1. One computer is a triple-boot adding Ubuntu 22.04.1 to the mix.

Ralph has purchased a GEEKOM MiniAir11 Minicomputer. He's running Windows 11 and Ubuntu 22.04.1.

I have not been offered Windows 11 Professional 22H2 on my Clevo laptop. I decided to manually install the upgrade.

STEPS:
Created a incremental backup of Windows 11 using Macrium Reflect (licensed)
Installed Windows 11 Professional 22H2 from the Windows11InstallationAssistant.exe
Rebooted and everything worked AOK
Updated the new installation
Opened Macrium Reflect to create an incremental backup
Macrium Reflect would not create a incremental backup because I was in trial mode and not a licensed user
There was no option to remove the Macrium Reflect license
Using the Macrium Reflect Rescue Media I restore the previous incremental backup of Windows 11
Opened up Macrium Reflect and removed the license from my Clevo laptop
Installed Windows 11 Professional 22H2 from a USB flash drive as "local Account."
Updated the new installation
Installed Macrium Reflect and put in my key for the Clevo laptop
Macrium Reflect now stated I was a licensed user
I did a clean Ubuntu Mate 22.04.1 installation

Take away from this computing experience:
This is the second time I have used Macrium Reflect to restore from an incremental backup since it was purchased in November 2021. It worked flawlessly and FAST!
It was time to do a "clean install" as this was the original 2019 Windows installation.
Although this laptop is not used as much as in the past I wanted to take the time to get it squeaky clean.

General Discussion / Set Up Windows 11 22H2 with a Local Account
« on: September 29, 2022, 11:28:26 AM »
I just purchased a new Intel NUC 12th Generation to be used as my HTPC (Home Theater PC).

I did not want to use a Microsoft account which is now required on a Windows 11 22H2 clean install. I don't need Microsoft tracking me on the little NUC.

I used this hack/technique to create a "local account."

Starting with Windows 11 22H2, Pro editions would also require an online account. However, the bypass of *** Email address is removed for privacy *** and garbage password (no@thankyou.com) still works.

On a side note... This little NUC is FAST!!!

General Discussion / Internet Speed
« on: July 26, 2022, 09:35:20 AM »
Occasionally I check my Internet speeds to see what they are. I have Charter/Spectrum Internet for $94.99/month (400 down and 20 up) in Shell Beach.

The Internet speed in Santa Maria is 400 down and 10 up for $50.00/month. That rate will be increasing in August 2023.

What speed are you getting?

General Discussion / Two choices to make a PDF - Save or Print?
« on: June 23, 2022, 08:47:58 AM »
It's helpful to post a PDF on the bulletin board in lieu of a Microsoft Word document. A PDF is a more readable format on all platforms. A PDF is also less vulnerable to some kind of embedded security risk.

General Discussion / Raspberry Pi Setup
« on: June 16, 2022, 12:33:19 PM »
I'm in the process of setting up a Raspberry Pi to send ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast) data to FlightRadar24 in Sweden.

One step closer to the final setup...

1. Assembled the Pi
2. Flashed a Mushkin USB flash drive with the Raspberry Pi OS
3. Connected a keyboard, mouse and monitor for an easy setup
4. Updated the Pi
5. Changed the default password
6. Set a Reserved IP for the Pi
7. Setup/Tested SSH (Secure Shell) to log in remotely with a terminal using Putty (Portable App) in Windows and also Windows Terminal
8. Setup/Tested VNC (Virtual Network Computing) graphical desktop-sharing system using a standalone VNC Viewer in Windows
9. Setup/Tested SSH and VNC on macOS and Ubuntu Mate Linux
10. Just for proof of concept... Setup/Tested VNC on my 12.9" iPad Pro

Future items to-do:
1. Erect outside antenna with cabling (terminating with a USB cable going from my garage into my office and connecting to the Pi)
2. Setup the FlightRadar24 configuration on the PI
