General Discussion / Photo Group Report for 10/09/2022
« on: October 09, 2022, 06:55:26 PM »
Hello All,
Here is my report for the SLO Bytes Photo Group Meeting of 10/09/2022

TOPIC: Look Up; Share images consistent with the theme

Ralph Sutter opened the meeting with rooftops, structures and other objects as seen from below.

Alan Raul showed updated images of the Shell Beach construction project of the new seawall, staircase and sidewalk along the oceanfront. He showed "before and after" images using Adobe Photoshop 2022 and the image perspective tool.

Stanford Brown first asked for ideas as to how to improve an image in which light from a large window blew out the facial features of the subject standing beside it. He later offered a bird nest, seascapes and hot rods seen at Cider Creek Bakery, Paso Robles

Kaye Raul
delivered a slide show of her recent camping trip to Yosemite Valley, complete with flowing rivers, towering trees and iconic rocks.

John Waller took his camera to San Luis Regional Airport, capturing planes in flight. To this he added rain clouds, a missile launch and a full moon.

Our final meeting of 2022 will take place on December 11th beginning at 2:00pm

Hopefully, you were able to create a live USB drive, presented in last month's workshop, to test out Linux Mint without making any changes to your computer. This month we are going to focus on the actual installation on a computer. Orv will begin with a hardware improvement that will bring new life to your laptop or desktop (SSD). Then Cal will take us through an actual default install of Linux Mint-Cinnamon on a spare computer from start to finish. He will also talk about some of the necessary tasks that need to be done when first setting up a Linux computer. Linux distros come with just about every piece of software you need, but many Windows users are used to the paid MS Office productivity suite. Orv will return to tell you, "All you need is LOVE" (LibreOffice Very Effective), and how it solves all your production needs. Wrapping things up, Dave will go over many of the other default programs that come with Linux and explain what tasks and file types they will help you complete.

General Discussion / Create an ISO Image of a Data DVD
« on: October 03, 2022, 01:34:50 PM »
Hello All,
I wanted to copy the content of an installation DVD to my computer.  While there may be many ways to accomplish this, I opted to use the freeware program, InfraRecorder; http://infrarecorder.org/
For my step-by-step tutorial, I created the following file; https://www.fullbean.com/tutorials/infrarecorder.html

Hello All,
I have made a side-by-side comparison of the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and the Geekom Mini Air 11
The Raspberry Pi sells for $184.95 plus $21.95 shipping at https://www.canakit.com/raspberry-pi-4-extreme-aluminum-case-kit.html

The Geekom Geekom Mini Air 11 11th Gen Intel is available for $229.00 (free 2-5 day shipping) at https://www.geekompc.com/geekom-miniair-11-mini-pc
Both computers are small desktop units.  The first machine runs Raspberry Pi NOOBS on a 128Gb SD Card.
The latter runs Windows 11 Professional from a 256Gb M.2 drive

I have attached an expanded side-by-side comparison

Hello All,
On my local network, I have a Ubuntu server that I call Thinkserver.
I also have a Synology server running on the same LAN.
The server running Synology shows up in the Windows 11 Workgroup folder. Thinkserver does not.

Until I solved that problem, I couldn't access Thinkserver.
The solution that I found was to open(Windows 11)  File Explorer and in the address bar type \\Thinkserver
When I pressed Enter, the address bar then showed Network > thinkserver
Having done so, I gained complete access to the server
I got the same results if I typed \\THINKSERVER or \\10.0.0.61, the IP address

Now, when I go to the Workgroup folder, Thinkserver appears

I created an illustrated explanation of this process on my personal website at
https://www.fullbean.com/tutorials/no-ubuntu-server.html

General Discussion / Inexpensive Small Form Factor PC Running Windows 11 Pro
« on: September 16, 2022, 10:03:54 AM »
Hello All,
I just purchased the following computer
https://www.amazon.com/GEEKOM-MiniAir11-Computer-Windows-Desktop/dp/B0B1V59HPX/ref=dp_prsubs_3

It has a small form factor and is running Windows 11 Pro
At $209.99 tax not included, I thought that it was a great deal for an extra PC.  It has a VESA mount

General Discussion / SLO Bytes Photo Group Report for 09/11/2022
« on: September 11, 2022, 05:40:24 PM »
Hello All
Here are my Notes for the SLO Bytes Photo Group Meeting of 09/11/2022
TOPIC: New Skills, New Thrills Again

Ralph Sutter opened the meeting calling attention to the Links Page; https://www.slobytes.org/digital/links.html, of the Photography Group website.  It cited PhotoSync, free software that allows the user to wirelessly transfer images and videos between smart phones and  computers.  Ralph created a YouTube video demonstrating the program.  View it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgnQOCqibJE
Ralph then showed images of his coffee harvest, experiments with his new TT Artisan f2.0  50mm fixed focus lens and photos taken with his Samsung Galaxy s22 smartphone.  Finally, he shared images of his kayaking trip to the San Juan Islands and the Portland wedding album that he created for his nephew.

Alan Raul continued to explore Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) photography. ICM photography is an impressionistic and abstract style of shooting that has no rules - it all comes down to moving your camera over a long exposure.

Stanford Brown demonstrated the play of light on leaves, cats, kids and farms

Kaye Raul introduced the group to Midjourney.com; https://www.midjourney.com/home/, a web portal that used artificial intelligence to create original images from your input

Connie Sutter chronicled her challenges in attempting to take a picture of the moon with her Canon digital camera, commenting that she got far better results using her iPhone.

The next meeting will take place on October 9th beginning at 2:00 pm. The topic for the meeting is Look Up   Members are encouraged to offer images that the topic suggests.
The meeting will be held via Zoom. An invitation will be e-mailed to Photo Group members shortly before the meeting.
The meeting schedule for the remainder of 2022 is as follows
   November 13
   December 11
All meetings begin at 2:00pm

Hard Disk Sentinel, Gabe Goldberg. Gabe will give a short presentation and demo of Hard Dick Sentinel (HDS). All members of APCUG groups are eligible for the 50% discount. HDS monitors drive status, including health, temperature, and all S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) values for all hard disk and solid-state drives. And it measures the disk transfer speed in real-time, which can benchmark or detect possible hard disk failures, and performance degradations. It is the perfect data protection solution: it can prevent drive failure and SSD/HDD data loss because it has the most sensitive disk health rating system, which is extremely sensitive to disk problems.
If you have questions for Gabe, please put them in the Chat Box with a G before the question.

Apple and Samsung Health Apps, Jerry Rogan & Bill James. We can track and maintain our health by using our watches compatible with the popular Apple or Samsung Health apps. They can become our digital assistants.

Jerry Rogan will begin the workshop by giving a presentation and demo on Apple's health apps; Bill James will follow with the same for the Samsung health apps.

Please put your questions in the Chat Box with a J or B before the question, and we will go through them after the two presentations.

Learning Linux - Getting started using Linux from the Windows users' point of view
John Kennedy & Cal Esneault. This will be the first of a 3-part series specifically for Windows users who want to learn more about Linux while still using Windows. In part one of the series, Introducing Linux, we'll begin with John sharing what software Windows users could/should be running to make the "slide" over to Linux easy. Then John will show the step-by-step process for downloading the Linux Mint ISO (installation file) and another program called Etcher (program to make live USBs) onto your Windows machine. John will finish up his portion of the workshop by taking you through creating a live USB with Mint on it. Next, Cal takes over and will show you the step-by-step process of getting your Windows computer to boot to the live USB so you can run the Linux Mint operating system without making ANY changes to your Windows operating system. Finally, Cal will finish this first session by giving you a tour of the live distro and what things you might need to check.

Hello All
When my smartphone was an iPhone X, I routinely used WiFi Photo Transfer; https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/wifi-photo-transfer/id380326191  to move images and videos from my iPhone to my PC.
I recently switched to an Android phone, specifically a Samsung Galaxy S22.  Sadly, Wi-Fi Photo Transfer is not compatible with Android devices.

After a long search, I discovered an Android app that transfers images to PCs, PhotoSync;
Download it from https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.touchbyte.photosync&gl=US

The app claims to work cross-platform;   https://www.photosync-app.com/home.html stating that it can transfer between Android or iPhone smart phones and computers running Windows, Apple OS and Linux.  I have not verified this claim.

It took me quite a while to set up PhotoSync.  You have to install the PhotoSync app on your smartphone and also install a companion program, PhotoSync Companion; https://www.photosync-app.com/downloads.html on your computer.
Initially, I couldn’t get the program to connect to my Windows 11 Pro computers.  I verified all of the settings in PhotoSync and made sure that the PCs and the Samsung S22 shared the same Wi-Fi network.  Still, the program failed to connect to any PC.

I finally solved the problem by changing Permissions on the PCs
Here is the process that I followed.

From the Start Menu of the PC, click on All apps
Scroll down to PhotoSync
Instead of opening that program, right click on it and then click on More/Open File Location
Once there, click on Properties/Security
You may see  your log in name listed.  If you do, click on Edit and make sure that your login name is still selected.  If your login name doesn’t appear, add it by clicking the Add button
In the Allow column, check Read and Write
Click Apply
Click OK

Once that you have made these changes, PhotoSync should work properly, allowing you to transfer media back and forth from your computer to your smartphone
I created a YouTube video showing visually the process that I described above.  View my video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgnQOCqibJE
The information here is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to using PhotoSync
You will find that resource on the PhotoSync website; https://www.photosync-app.com/home.html

Hello All,
When I changed my Internet provider over to Starlink, I had to set the Starlink router to Bypass Mode in order to continue using my Netgear Orbi mesh router to assign ip addresses.

After bypassing the Starlink router, the address for all of my networked devices spontaneously changed from the format 192.168.1.xx to 10.0.0.xx

There was one exception; my Ubuntu server that I call Thinkserver remained unchanged at 192.168.1.61

As a result, I could only connect to Thinkserver from the PCs on my network.

Machines running Linux, Mac OS or Raspberry Pi refused to connect to Thinkserver. To fix this, I wanted to change Thinkserver's ip address to 10.0.0.61

These are the steps that I took to change Thinkserver's ip address

On Thinkserver, I went to the Terminal and typed ifconfig

I made note of the values listed there

The relevant information was

eno1 (This is the onboard Ethernet/wired adapter)
inet 192.168.1.61
Netmask 255.255.255.0
Bcast 192.168.1.255

To change my ip address, I typed sudo ifconfig eno1 down (Turns off network)

sudo ifconfig eno1 10.0.0.61 netmask 255.255.255.0
(Ethernet adapter, new inet address, netmask address)

sudo ifconfig eno1 up (Turns network back on)

ifconfig (Confirms whether the requested changes were made)

The operation was successful. Thinkserver is now visible from all devices.
