Yellowstone National Park is a similar experience, with very few cell towers within its vast area. This presentation will show you how to download videos from YouTube and other free sites at home using a free application for Windows, Macintosh, and Ubuntu Linux, so you can copy the video file to your laptop, smartphone, or tablet to view on the go. Additionally, if you subscribe to a media service like Netflix, apps for the subscription services allow you to download their movies and TV episodes. However, it is not exactly obvious how to do that. You will see how to do that with Netflix

For the Software of the Month: Drew King will be sharing the KDEConnect program, where you can connect your smartphone to your computer, interact with it, and practically do what you would do on it while still on the Linux computer.

Our Desktop Environment Spotlight for June will be John Kennedy, sharing features of the Xfce desktop environment. We won't have a Distro Dive as we haven't had any volunteers to share something other than a Deb-based distro. So, we'll skip that feature again this month.

And before we open things up for general questions and discussions, Orv Beach will be back with another lesson in "Taming the Terminal."

General Discussion / Conversion Calculator
« on: June 17, 2023, 03:05:34 PM »
Hello All,
I routinely copy my favorite cooking recipes to my website so that I can refer to them quickly rather than go searching through card files, cook books and other recipe websites.
See https://fullbean.com/recipes/recipes.html
Lately, I have begun to convert all volume measurements to weight equivalents in grams; grams over ounces because 454 grams is a more precise measurement than 16 ounces.
Needing to convert 1 tablespoon of nutmeg to grams, I used the link below
    https://www.aqua-calc.com/calculate/food-volume-to-weight

The site told me that 1 tablespoon of Nutmeg weighs 7 grams
(One tablespoon of salt weighs 18.3 grams)

I could find the gram weight of a cup of rolled oats, short grain rice, millet or Gold Medal General Purpose Wheat Flour (UPC: 00016000104105)
As shown, the site could provide very specific volume to weight conversions

The same site also offered to calculate mortgage rates, cylinder volumes, solid geometric figures, quadratic equations, generate passwords and furnish many more conversions

I found the information to be very useful

Working with Windows. Windows 10 and 11 are complex operating systems with many features and functions. Even if you've used Windows for a long time, there is still more to learn. So, do you want to learn how to improve your basic computer skills? How to make Windows run faster and smoother? Solve some PC problems all by yourself? Learn to use some useful computer keyboard shortcuts? Learn better ways to find and view files with Windows File Explorer? How to make Windows 11 look and work more like Windows 10? All this and much more in this easy-to-follow Working with Windows tutorial.

Windows Security Secrets (Windows 10/11). Microsoft Windows Security, formerly known as Windows Defender, offers various features that can be considered competitive against other antivirus software in the market. However, as with any product, Windows Security is not perfect and might not meet the needs of all users. For example, some users might require advanced features, like a secure VPN, or have specific needs related to enterprise-scale network security. Many third-party products may offer these features, which would need to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. This presentation will walk you through the little-known features of Windows Security with a hands-on demonstration.

General Discussion / SLO Bytes Photo Group Notes for 06/11/2023
« on: June 12, 2023, 10:15:50 AM »
Hello All,
What follows is my SLO Bytes Photo Group Report for June 11, 2023

TOPIC: Boats

Ralph Sutter opened the meeting with a series of images shot at the Morro Bay Harbor before heading up the coast to above Cayucos.  There, he shared numerous pictures of the Point Estero, a wrecked commercial fishing boat on the rocks of Estero Bluffs.  Ralph used a Zeiss FE 35mm F2.8 ZA primary lens on a Sony A7IV camera

Alan Raul shot images of boats at Baywood Park in Los Osos and Morro Bay. He chose to only show original JPGs from his Sony A7iv camera WITHOUT any modifications. Last month he shot all his photos with a Sony 35mm F2.8 lens. This month he shot with his Sony 24 - 70 F4.0 lens trying to only shoot at 28mm. He found that about 80% of the pictures could be shot at 28mm. He has a new Sony 28mm F2.0 arriving this week.

Kaye Raul ventured to both Avila and Port San Luis for her images.  offering seascapes, both in color and in black and white.  Kaye suggested that the group look at the link  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63xd7qu83FU&t=2469s for an impressive demonstration of Photoshop’s generative fill.

John Waller visited Lopez Lake focusing on boats seen at the Marina and in Mallard Cove.  The then moved to Morro Bay and captured the harbor dredge and Coast Guard self-righting rescue boats.  Using his new Canon EOS R6 Mark2  camera, John shot a hawk perched in a tree and then cropped the image severely while still presenting a tack-sharp photo.

Stanford Brown took us on a round the world tour of boats ranging from canal boats in Italy to freighters from Argentina, tug boats in Alaska and junks in Hong Kong before returning to local waters
The next meeting will take place on July 9th, 2023, beginning at 2:00 pm via Zoom The topic will be Images in Black and White.

Hello All,

Up until now, the first hour of parking in any of the three parking structures was free.  That is about to change.
However, San Luis Obispo County residents can apply for a permit to extend that benefit.
It only applies to parking in the Palm Street parking structure.

LibreOffice. Free software – it’s all about sharing. John’s (otherwise known as “Free John”) presentation covers the flagship productivity suite, LibreOffice. This software has all the components (and a couple of extras) that another major software company has that is widely used. He takes us on a hands-on tour of the different sub-programs, and hopefully, you discover a free program with all the features you need in a productivity suite.

Mesh Routers. The purpose of a computer router is to connect multiple devices and facilitate communication by directing traffic on your network. Mesh routers are used to cover your entire house with consistent wireless signals. They are a popular home networking technology that uses multiple nodes, the connection point among network devices such as routers, printers, or switches that can receive and send data from one endpoint to another.

A Potpourri of Mini Presentations. Judy will show us how easy it is to create a mini presentation from various tech sources.

General Discussion / Photo Group Notes for 05/21/2023
« on: May 21, 2023, 04:42:44 PM »
Hello All,
Here are my Notes from the SLO Bytes Photo Group of 05/21/2023
TOPIC: Lines

Ralph Sutter opened the meeting with images of row crops, orchards, slatted doors and string trimmer line.

Alan Raul shot ALL his images with a Sony 35mm F2.8 lens. These included images from in and around the Guadalupe, Grover Beach and San Luis Obispo train stations. In addition, he shot a few from the Guadalupe fields, Shell Beach and the 911 World Trade Center memorial located at the San Luis Obispo Fire Station #1. https://www.kcbx.org/community/2015-09-10/new-central-coast-9-11-memorial-lets-you-touch-history

Alan showed still images extracted from videos from his new dash cam and the Avila Beach Polar Bear Plunge using Adobe Photoshop.
He got the idea from the Tim Gray article entitled "Extracting a Photo from Video." https://asktimgrey.com/2023/05/02/extracting-a-photo-from-video/ He used VLC to convert the .MOV file shot with the iPhone to a MP4. You can also extract a still image from Adobe Premier Elements and DaVinci Resolve.

Kaye Raul, having figured out the issue that kept her from sharing photos at the April meeting, shared them today. They included crops and fields. Apropos of this month's topic, she presented a Lightroom slide show complete with music. Most notable was her image of the flooded Oceano campground. Kaye used Adobe's tools to erase distracting items and enhance the visual impact

Stanford Brown found lines in stairways, roads, pathways and power transmission lines

John Waller visited Lopez Lake to show the changes brought by the heavy Spring rains

Connie Sutter focused on lines created by pine needles and sedimentation lines in rock

Linda Styerwalt traced lines in flooring, wainscotting, doors and bakers' racks

The next meeting will take place on June 11th 2023 beginning at 2:00 pm via Zoom The topic will be Boats

The meeting schedule for the remainder of 2023 is as follows
   July 9
   August 13
   September 10
   October 8
   November 12
   December 10

General Discussion / Counter Intuitive Pricing Model
« on: May 15, 2023, 11:40:44 AM »
Hello All,
I recently shopped on-line for sprinkler heads.  I found what I was looking for at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004S1TY
If I bought one sprinkler head, the price was $1.67 per unit.
If I bought two, the price was $9.59; That's $4.80 per unit.
If I bought three, the price was $11.24/$3.74 per unit.
If I bought five, the price was $15.39/$3.08 per unit.
If I bought ten, the price was $27.45/$2.75 per unit.
If I bought twenty, the price was $51.20/$2.56 per unit.

My solution was to buy one at $1.67, then buy another at $1.67 and buy a third unit at $1.67
I don't understand the logic behind this pricing model but suspect that it's tied to an irrational shipping rate structure.

 Learning Linux
Features of the “Disks” app
Question of the Month
Desktop Showcase – Xfce
Open Mic

Register here – https://forms.gle/67oh9XJAzVRJ1WKaA
After you click Submit, you will receive a pop-up acknowledgment (see below) of your registration and that you will receive the workshop encrypted Zoom link on Tuesday, May 16, after registration closes at 6 pm Pacific Time.

Join us this month as we continue to explore the Linux operating system. Our featured presentations are as follows.

John will be looking at the features of the “Disks” app for our “Software Showcase.”

For our “Question of the Month,” Cal will discuss the differences between the initially created Cinnamon Desktop Environment developed by Mint and the new Cinnamon Desktop Environment developed by Ubuntu. During “Desktop Discovery,” John will show us the last of the original desktop environments, Xfce. This was considered the “lightest” option for users.

Our terminal instructor, wait – that doesn’t sound very good; our teacher for Taming the Terminal will be unavailable for this month’s meeting, so that we won’t have a session on that topic. But we will be having an open forum for all levels of users for questions and concerns attendees might have about the Linux operating system. So, if we can’t answer them at the workshop, we’ll try at next month’s workshop.
