I have been looking for the cost of 1 TB SSD's to drop. I have been using 1 TB Toshiba spinning HDD's for many years for off-site backup. They don't get much use so I didn't need to go with high-quality Samsung SSD. The spinning HDD's were getting painfully slow when you are use to SSD's.

I was looking at:
Inland 1TB 3D NAND SATA III 6Gb/s 2.5" Internal Solid State Drive  from MicroCenter for $159.99.
http://www.microcenter.com/product/508183/1TB_3D_NAND_SATA_III_6Gb-s_25_Internal_Solid_State_Drive

Until this deal showed up on the Amazon Prime Day 2018:
SanDisk SSD PLUS 1TB Solid State Drive - SDSSDA-1T00-G26 from Amazon for $149.99.
It's interesting to note that these SanDisk SSD's were first available on Amazon on June 11, 2018.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D998212/

So I pulled the trigger and ordered 2. Now my off-site backups should take a fraction of time.

UPDATE: I had previously checked B&H and they were priced higher than Amazon. They now have dropped the price to match Amazon but without having to pay the sales tax.

General Discussion / New Club Projector
« on: July 07, 2018, 08:30:15 AM »
After the projector failure at the last meeting, the Board of Directors has decided to purchase a new projector. The old projector had lasted 11 years. Independently, Ralph and Alan came up with the same suggested Optoma projector for the club to purchase.

The new club projector is a Optoma HD143X 1080p 3000 Lumens Projector.

Rufus has been updated.

Portable Apps has a new version out... Rufus Portable 3.1 Build 2
https://portableapps.com/news/2018-06-25--rufus-portable-3.1-build-2-released

The same thing happened with Acronis True Image 2018 exe a few months back being misidentified by Windows Defender as containing a trojan.

The SLOLUG group uses Rufus to create Linux bootable USB flash drives. Rufus can also be used to create a Windows install USB. The latest version of Rufus 3.1 activates Windows 10 Defender that the exe contains a Trojan:Win32/Plutruption!ARXep

I have tried downloading directly from the official Rufus website in addition to the portableapps web site both with identical results.

In the mean time I have retrieved an older version of Rufus which still works.

It would be appreciated if anyone can verify my findings.

Thanks

https://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/rufus-portable

From the Rufus website:

IMPORTANT: Once again, as was the case with the 3.0 release, Windows Defender (with definition update 1.269.1834.0) is erroneously reporting that Rufus 3.1 may contain Trojan:Win32/Plutruption!ARXep. We have reported this to Microsoft yet again and we expect them to clear this false positive very soon. In the meantime, you are invited to re-download Rufus 3.1, as we have put a temporary new version online that shouldn't trigger the antivirus.

Chrome Is Scanning Files on Your Computer, and People Are Freaking Out

Some cybersecurity experts and regular users were surprised to learn about a Chrome tool that scans Windows computers for malware. But there’s no reason to freak out about it.

I found this article to be quite interesting. I wonder if this is true with portable Chrome which I use on occasion?
