Hello All,
My Dell 8930 desktop is still running 1803.
I followed the same steps that I used earlier to successfully update my Lenovo laptop.  However, when I downloaded and attempted to install 1809 manually, I got a message that the update wasn't the right one for my machine.  This happened twice.  The Dell 8930 is running Windows 10 Professional 64 bit.  On both occasions, I downloaded  2018-11 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1809 for x64-based Systems (KB4469342)

If this isn't the appropriate file for this computer, which one is?
I can only conclude that the 1809 update is still flawed.

How to speak with a Microsoft representative via phone
Go to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/contactus/
This will bring up Microsoft’s Virtual Assistant
Type a description of the problem.
Every time that the Virtual Assistant proposes a solution, try it before indicating that the suggestion didn’t solve the issue.  After you have done that repeatedly, the Virtual Assistant will ask if you want to speak to a representative over the phone.  Respond YES and supply the information requested at
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/contact/virtual-agent/?flowId=smc-contactus&partnerId=smc&referrer=support.office.com
Upon conclusion, the Virtual Assistant will inform you that someone will contact you at the phone number that you provided and give you an estimated wait time.  Do not rely on the accuracy of this estimate.  A representative will eventually call.

General Discussion / Parted Magic 2019_01_03 Released
« on: January 03, 2019, 12:05:51 PM »
Hello All,
Parted Magic just released a new version of its Linux based software.  Read more at https://partedmagic.com/downloads/
I find this product very useful in troubleshooting non-Linux operating systems.
At $11, it is a tool well worth having.

General Discussion / Re: Missing IE Favorites
« on: December 28, 2018, 09:26:19 AM »
Hi Dick,
Have you tried copying your IE Favorites to a new location?
Here's what I did.
Open IE
Click on Star (Favorites Bar)
Right Click on the Favorites Bar
Left Click on Copy
Paste the copied material to a folder that you create

I'm not sure if this new list will automatically update itself when the original IE Favorites self-destruct.
If so, this method won't work.
Still, it's worth a try.

Hello All,
I was finally able to update my Lenovo X1 Yoga laptop to Windows 10 version 1809.
Since the normal channels failed to install the update, I followed the steps at
https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/fix-potential-windows-update-database-error-detected-in-windows-10/
That process reported that I had a corrupted data base.
I followed all of the steps outlined at the link above.  All suggestions failed until I reached Fix Five

Fix 5: Perform an in-place upgrade
Performing an in-place upgrade may help resolve some troubles with the system. So maybe performing an in-place upgrade will fix this
issue. Try downloading the Media Creation Tool and then follow the on-screen instructions to perform an in-place upgrade. Here is how to
     do it:

Click https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10  to visit the Microsoft official website for downloading Windows 10.
Click Download tool now on the web page to download the Media Creation Tool.

The in-place upgrade didn't remove any of my installed programs or data as far as I can tell

Thanks to all who have offered suggestions for updating to Windows 10 version 1809

General Discussion / New PUSH Articles Available
« on: December 13, 2018, 04:02:38 PM »
Hello All,

Our APCUG Representative, Judy Taylour, often provides tech articles to supplement the newsletter of its member groups.
I never include any of them in the SLO Bytes newsletter, HardCopy.  Instead, I upload all of them to the SLO Bytes web site.
Judy just forwarded a new batch.
View all of them archived  at www.slobytes.org/push and http://www.slobytes.org/push/push-condensed.html
The latest ones can be found at http://www.slobytes.org/push/1218/index.html

General Discussion / Change a default icon in the Windows 10 taskbar
« on: December 13, 2018, 03:51:51 PM »
Hello All,
I place numerous icons in the Windows 10 taskbar, that area at the bottom of the screen.  I group the most often used icons to the left.  Icons for lesser used programs are on the right.

Two frequently used programs are Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Word.  Since the two icons are quite similar, I sometimes click on one when I really wanted the other.

One obvious solution would be to separate them, placing several other icons between them.  What is the fun in that?
I decided to create my own icon for Word and substitute it for the default icon.
I then created a short video reminding me and others of the steps that I took.

View the tutorial at www.fullbean.com/tutorials/icon.mp4
It is also available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bM_fDpSqmls&feature=youtu.be

Hi Dick,
Reading the information at https://www.chromestory.com/2011/01/where-are-my-favorites-in-google-chrome/
one learns that what IE calls Favorites are known as Bookmarks in Google Chrome.
I hope that this helps

Hi Doug,
Thanks for your response.  I manually check for updates several times a week.  Version 1809 has never been offered to me in this scenario.  Often, my first check assures me that everything is up to date.  I immediately check again.  Often, this finds an update for Windows Defender.  It usually installs without incident.

Yesterday, I downloaded the 1809 update from the Windows Update Catalog, windows10.0-kb4469342-x64_7290815610ac4c3d657eb5ed6e4e92421fa8c29a.msu
Several distros are available depending on your processor.  Since I have an Intel Core i7-8700 CPU@ 3.19GHz, I opted for the 2018-11 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1809
for x64-based Systems (KB4469342
) last updated on 12/04/2018
When I tried to install it, I got the following message The update is not applicable on your computer

This is speculation but I'm guessing that my computer has a combination of software and components whose compatibility for the current update, Microsoft has not yet resolved.
My plan is to continue to check for updates and update when 1809 is offered through the normal process.

Hello All,
I have several computers running Windows 10 Professional. I have automatic updates enabled and check for updates regularly.
I am running 1803 version KB 4023057.  I have not been offered 1809.
I believe that I can manually download and install updates from the Windows Update Catalog at http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=windows%2010%20version%201809
Questions:  If this is correct, can I just download the latest version of 1809 or do I have to download and install all of the earlier 1809 versions sequentially instead of skipping all but the latest one?
or
Should I wait for Microsoft to offer 1809 to me through automatic updates?

Please advise.
Thanks,
Ralph Sutter

Hello All,
Here are my notes from the SLO Bytes Photo Group meeting of 12/09/2018
TOPIC: Images Suggesting the Approach of Christmas
The meeting opened with Ralph Sutter showing how he uses Irfanview's Thumbnail Viewer to show thumbnails for RAW images in Windows. Windows native program, File Explorer doesn't do this.
See the tutorial at Showing Thumbnails in Windows for RAW files with Irfanview and at https://youtu.be/__Yb-pYlcQ8
Ralph then shared a series of holiday images with Christmas decorations, figurines and street scenes.

Connie Sutter followed with similar choices, adding fancy food plates and festive outdoor scenes.

Alan Raul continued in a similar vein, using Aurora HDR to enhance photos of Pismo Pier.

Kaye Raul showed holiday ornaments and pictures of the family celebrating the season.

Bob and Linda Styerwalt chose light displays in their neighborhood and Christmas decorations

John Waller demonstrated how he used long exposure times to illuminate night scenes.
Like Alan, John used Aurora HDR and multiple exposures to bring out detail not seen in a single image.

Bob Grover offered daylight and evening shots of a neighbor's house, illustrating an impressive lighting project.

Our next meeting will take place on Sunday, 01/13/2019 beginning at 2:00 pm.  The topic will be Doors and Other Portals

Hello All,

I have created a tutorial showing how I used Microsoft's Word 365 Mail Merge feature to create a letter for multiple recipients.
The video has three parts
Creating a data base from which to draw names and addresses
Writing a standard letter with a personalized greeting for each recipient
Addressing the envelopes by drawing from the data base.

View it on YouTube at https://youtu.be/bd2bPQBvac4
It is also contained in my collection of Fullbean Tutorials at www.fullbean.com/tutorials/tutorials.html
Specifically, it will be found at http://www.fullbean.com/tutorials/mailmerge.mp4

Hello All,
Windows File Explorer doesn't display a thumbnail for RAW images.  It shows the same blue blocky icon for all RW2 images.  In my tutorial, I show how to use the Thumbnail viewer plugin from the freeware graphics program, Irfanview to overcome this.
View the tutorial at https://youtu.be/__Yb-pYlcQ8
Download Irfanview from www.irfanview.com and choose either the 32 or 62 bit version.  Make sure to also download the corresponding Plugin files.
