new Microsoft Surface PRO
« on: June 22, 2017, 10:27:28 AM »
The new version of the Microsoft Surface PRO has arrived. It follows the Surface Pro 4, but has not been labeled #5. The reviews are beginning to appear and while they are generally positive, faster better new chips, bigger power supply, and longer battery time are some of the good new things pointed out.  Some things people wanted to see changed didn't all happen.  For example, physically the unit is the same as the model 4, and the ports have not been updated to new faster versions or additional ports. It also seems to have a couple of the same problems as the model 4.  Here is the "goes to Sleep when not wanted" problem as told on ZDNet.

The operating system is the new Windows 10 S, a somewhat cut down version, that can only run apps from the Windows Store.  I read that in a couple of months you will be able to update it to the Windows 10 Pro version for no charge.

I personally have given up on my 2014 Surface Pro. It's still a good choice for many. I have found my older 2015 Apple iPad Pro 12.9 was a better option for me. The slightly larger screen size means a lot to me. I have apps available to me on iOS that I use which are not available on Windows 10. I am still able to use Windows 10 applications by remotely logging into my desktop computer remotely or locally from my living room if the need arises. Since I have 2 iPhones (iPhone 7 Plus and a iPhone SE) everything just plays nicely together. I am still able to synchronize my files between iOS and Windows 10 and even Linux.

I have recently sold my old 2015 iPad Pro and am anxiously awaiting my new 2017 Apple iPad Pro 12.9 inch.

I continue to read reviews which point out the limitations of the new Surface Pro, especially the Windows 10 S operating system.  I am no longer certain that this is the answer for me, but look forward to trying it out when they are in the stores. I intend to give the new crop of Apple machines   a good look to replace my current   iPad 4, 9.7" machine. While I have been happy with it, I still do not like some of the limitations of the Apple machines.

Here's a YouTube comparison of the Apple and Microsoft tablets.

Although everyone is opinionated she does a pretty good comparison.
