Hello All,
Here are my Notes for the SLO Bytes Photo Group Meeting of 04/14/2024
TOPIC: Flowers

Ralph Sutter opened the meeting sharing images of wild and garden flowers seen around Arroyo Grande.  Most were shot with a Sony A7iv camera and a 2.8 50mm Sony primary lens.  Often, Ralph edited these images using Luminar Neo, particularly the Super Sharp extension.

Alan Raul shot a variety of images of flowers around Shell Beach and Pismo Beach using his iPhone, Leica and Sony cameras. He shot a variety of images using focus bracketing which is built into the Sony A7R V camera which automatically brackets the images. He then used focus stacking in post processing using Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop.

Kaye Raul showed poppies, roses, freeway daisies and hydrangeas, promising to explore focus stacking in the near future.

John Waller played with depth of field and blankets of color, pointing his camera to yellow wildflowers, irises and historical images of Waller Seed?s Open House.

Stanford Brown told a visual tale of bees in flowers, apple blossoms, margarita daisies, thistle, roses, rosebuds and succulents.

The topic for May will be Learn Something New and Share It with the Group

In deference to Mothers' Day on May 12th, the meeting will take place on May 19th via Zoom beginning at 2:00 pm.
The meeting schedule for the remainder of 2024 is as follows
  June 9   September 8   December 8
  July 14   October 13
August 11   November 10

Is Your Car Spying on You? Why Your Car Collects and Shares Data. A car (and its app, if you installed one on your phone) can collect all sorts of data in the background without you realizing it. This, in turn, may be shared for various purposes, including advertising and risk assessment for insurance companies. The data collection list is long and depends on the car's make, model, and trim. But if you look through any car maker's privacy policy, you'll see some trends. Dale will talk about what types of data may be shared with, among others, dealers, repair companies, emergency services, advertising, and insurance companies.

Use Zoom's "Take Control," Microsoft's "Quick Assist," or "Remote Assistance" to Help Someone with Their Windows Computer.
Francis' presentation will consist of live demonstrations to show you how to use your "Zoom Meetings Client" or Microsoft's "Quick Assist" or "Remote Assistance" to help a Windows.. computer user without being physically present at their home or business. Francis will use two virtual machines, each connected to a different Internet service provider, to show you how these two remote control capabilities look from the standpoint of the helper's computer AND the helped person's computer. Francis will give demonstrations on:
Zoom's "Take Control" feature
Windows bundled "Quick Assist"
Windows "Remote Assistance"

Hello All,
Recently, a friend contacted me with the sad story of her Windows 11 computer refusing to boot.
I tried to get in but was no more successful than she was.
I decided to remove the M.2 hard drive from that computer, place it in an external M.2 carrier and plug this USB device into a laptop running Linux Ubuntu 22.04.
The Ubuntu file system recognized the external USB drive.  I navigated to the documents folder on the external drive and successfully copied the contents to a flash drive.
I then plugged the flash drive into my Windows 11 computer and was able to read, write and execute the recovered files.

Here is a link to the M.2 USB carrier

https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Type-C-Tool-Free-Enclosure-EC-SNVE/dp/B08RVC6F9Y/ref=sr_1_1_sspa  $26.99

Please note that the recovery should work with many other USB m.2 enclosures and diverse Linux operating systems.

I bought the device through Amazon Prime.  The seller offered a coupon for $20.  With the discount, my cost was $150.13.

Here are some specs
GMKtec Mini PC N100, G3 Intel Alder Lake N100
Windows 11 Pro (3.4GHz)
8GB DDR4 RAM
256GB PCIe M.2 SSD

And how exactly would you go about restoring data if disaster struck? In this presentation, Joe explores the options available and helps you find a strategy that balances data safety, ease of use, and cost.

The Computer Backup, Your Lifeline in Case of Digital Emergency. We hear about data breaches, ransomware attacks, and the catastrophic destruction of businesses and homes every day. But untold is the loss of information like digital documents, pictures, and information. In today's world, where we live in digital times, who have all their "e-data" property in a safe place?

In his presentation, we will explain the different technologies, media, and methods you need to succeed! He will discuss several key factors for a worry-free, data-retaining world!

Hello All,
The Dewalt DCB090 is a device that is attached to a Dewalt 20 volt battery.  This add-on is essentially a battery pack.  It has two USB-A ports and allows the user to charge small electronic devices.  The unit itself is charged by attaching it to a Dewalt 20 volt battery that is in turn plugged in to the Dewalt battery charger.  Once charged, the add on is disconnected.  Fully charged, it holds a 6 Ah charge.  I carried it with me on a 5 day kayaking trip to the San Juan Islands and used it to recharge cell phones and hand-held GPS units.

Buy it at https://www.lowes.com/pd/DEWALT-20-Volt-Max-Power-Source-Adapter/50102394 for $47.98
Download the manual from https://www.dewalt.com/GLOBALBOM/QU/DCB090/1/Instruction_Manual/EN/N388185_DCB090.pdf
It appears that Dewalt is no longer manufacturing the unit

In researching, I found a much less expensive unit.  It is simply a USB adapter.  You attach it to a charged battery pack and then pack both of them for recharging electronic devices in the field.  See https://www.amazon.com/Fybemax-Charger-Adapter-Battery-Charging/dp/B0CMX4MBGM Two pack for $17.99.
I have no experience with this product and can offer no recommendation for it.

Learning Linux
With the Linux Team
Orv Beach, Cal Esneault, and John Kennedy

Join us for another Learning Linux workshop where John will review the results of last Fall's polls and hear what the team feels they mean. We also developed two important follow-up questions to help us plan future workshops.

February is Open Source Software (OSS) month, and Orv will present what OSS means to him. One of the major open source, cross-platform software programs is LibreOffice.  Cal will be doing a presentation on LibreOffice's presentation program, Impress, that you should find informative. We will finish up the presentations with John, sharing information about where you go to get software or where what you are offered in Linux comes from.

The team will have their customary Open Mic where you can ask additional questions, share your thoughts on the topics presented, tell us about your favorite open source software, and maybe even submit an idea for future presentations or volunteer to give a presentation.

We look forward to seeing you this Wednesday.

Hello All,

My HP Laptop (model 15-eg0073cl) started warning me that my C drive was running out of space.
I wanted to replace that drive, an Intel 512 GB PCIe? NVMe? M.2 SSD, with a SAMSUNG 990 PRO Series - 2TB PCIe Gen4. X4 NVMe drive.

Since I had configured the Intel drive with partitions for both Windows 11 and Ubuntu Linux, I had my doubts about how to proceed.

I knew that Samsung offered a free software tool, Samsung Magician; https://www.samsung.com/us/memory-storage/magician-software/ , that claimed that it could move the contents of one drive to another but I thought that it only worked if both the original drive and the target drive were made by Samsung.

I learned that such was not the case.  Samsung Magician allows a user to migrate up to 3 partitions from one drive to another using a GUI interface,  Only the new drive (the Target) has to be made by Samsung

I inserted the new drive in a Sabrent NVMe enclosure,
https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Type-C-Tool-Free-Enclosure-EC-SNVE/dp/B08RVC6F9Y?th=1

I then used the provided USB-C cable to connect the laptop to the enclosure and launched Samsung Magician.  After about 15 minutes, the cloning was completed.

Next I removed the 6 screws from the bottom of the laptop and pried off the back to gain access to the Intel NVMe drive.  I swapped it without incident for the larger drive and then successfully booted up the laptop.  Everything worked
