General Discussion / Free APCUG Linux Workshop 02/21/24
« Last post by rsutter on February 19, 2024, 08:13:38 AM »
Hello All,
This is a re-post of a notice received today from SLO Bytes' parent organization, APCUG
Ralph Sutter

LINUX  WORKSHOP February 21, 2024
9 am PT, 10 am MT, 11 am CT, 12 pm ET

Learning Linux
With the Linux Team
Orv Beach, Cal Esneault, and John Kennedy

Register here ? https://forms.gle/pyxdcQxyq8jfEMnd9

After you click Submit, you will receive a pop-up acknowledgment of your registration and the workshop encrypted Zoom link email on Tuesday, February 20, after registration closes at 6 pm Pacific Time.

Join us for another Learning Linux workshop where John will review the results of last Fall's polls and hear what the team feels they mean. We also developed two important follow-up questions to help us plan future workshops.

February is Open Source Software (OSS) month, and Orv will present what OSS means to him. One of the major open source, cross-platform software programs is LibreOffice.  Cal will be doing a presentation on LibreOffice's presentation program, Impress, that you should find informative. We will finish up the presentations with John, sharing information about where you go to get software or where what you are offered in Linux comes from.

The team will have their customary Open Mic where you can ask additional questions, share your thoughts on the topics presented, tell us about your favorite open source software, and maybe even submit an idea for future presentations or volunteer to give a presentation.

We look forward to seeing you this Wednesday.

Hello All,

My HP Laptop (model 15-eg0073cl) started warning me that my C drive was running out of space.
I wanted to replace that drive, an Intel 512 GB PCIe? NVMe? M.2 SSD, with a SAMSUNG 990 PRO Series - 2TB PCIe Gen4. X4 NVMe drive.

Since I had configured the Intel drive with partitions for both Windows 11 and Ubuntu Linux, I had my doubts about how to proceed.

I knew that Samsung offered a free software tool, Samsung Magician; https://www.samsung.com/us/memory-storage/magician-software/ , that claimed that it could move the contents of one drive to another but I thought that it only worked if both the original drive and the target drive were made by Samsung.

I learned that such was not the case.  Samsung Magician allows a user to migrate up to 3 partitions from one drive to another using a GUI interface,  Only the new drive (the Target) has to be made by Samsung

I inserted the new drive in a Sabrent NVMe enclosure,
https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Type-C-Tool-Free-Enclosure-EC-SNVE/dp/B08RVC6F9Y?th=1

I then used the provided USB-C cable to connect the laptop to the enclosure and launched Samsung Magician.  After about 15 minutes, the cloning was completed.

Next I removed the 6 screws from the bottom of the laptop and pried off the back to gain access to the Intel NVMe drive.  I swapped it without incident for the larger drive and then successfully booted up the laptop.  Everything worked

Hello All,

Tax Software Review
Tax Year 2023
Tom Burt, Vice President
Sun City Summerlin Computer Club

Register here – https://forms.gle/qfCPczcM5okXY73c9
After you click Submit, you will see a pop-up acknowledgment of your registration. You will receive the workshop encrypted Zoom link on Friday, February 9, after registration closes at 6 pm Pacific Time.

Tax Software Review. Two of the most popular programs for preparing your income tax return are H&R Block and Turbo Tax. You can run these programs on your PC or Mac or work with the online versions.

Purchase one of these software programs, install it on your PC (or go to the maker's website), and answer the step-by-step questions. When you've finished, either program will provide you with a finished tax return ready for filing. You can even choose to file your return electronically!

Happily, for 2023, the tax law changes for individuals were few and minor. In this year's presentation, we will discuss both programs briefly and then demonstrate the excellent H&R Block Deluxe program. We will create a 2023 tax return for a fictitious senior couple with typical financial transactions such as wage income or retirement benefits, interest and dividends, social security benefits, capital gains, itemized deductions, required minimum distributions, etc. You may be surprised how easy it is to prepare and file your tax return. We'll also look at how to set up electronic payments on the IRS website.

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday.

I have been using a REG file for many years. I always keep a copy in my "Toolbox" folder for future Windows installations. You just click on the REG file and it's entered into the Windows Registry.

Hello All,
Long ago, I set up my Windows 11 computer so that right clicking showed all options initially instead of having to click Show More Options
I recently added a new computer and couldn't remember what I did to accomplish this.  It's a simple fix.  Open the Terminal as Administrator and paste in the text shown in bold on the next line.
reg.exe add "HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID\{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}\InprocServer32" /f /ve

While there are other ways to accomplish this, the one shown is the shortest and least complicated.
